Went to see a friend playing in a gig. Great small venue for local bands and a lovely place to meet up with a group. It’s in a perfect location in Hoxton Square, not too far from the Northern Line. The bar is quirky and cool, with an upstairs and outside area for eating, drinking and talking. You head downstairs and you find the music venue, which has comfortable places to sit, plenty of standing room and a bar. I’m looking forward to checking it out again when I’m not there for a band, as it seems like a fun location to meet up with my girls.

This is a really fun venue that I just visited for the first time to check out my friend’s band. The location alone sells the bar alone– in Hoxton Square, it’s easy to get there from the overground and Northern Line and is central, which is ideal for meeting friends from all over. Also, this is a fun, artsy and quirky bar. There’s the main entrance to the bar and the downstairs for the live music. I went to see my friend’s band, Midnight Embargo, and it was really fun. The stage is small and the viewing space is quite big. The bar is well staffed and the drinks are very reasonably priced. I was only here for an hour, but it was a very enjoyable one. I will absolutely come here again!

For what it’s worth, this place is just a trendy Shoreditch club that could be better managed. What I have a problem with the most is the lack of attention that manager(s) give to customers. My mate had his engagement drinks here and reserved a section for their guests. Yet upon arrival, there was no section blocked off for him — other reserved sections had name cards but his(and apparently a couple others) were not reserved. After speaking with management, he had to kick people out of his reserved section(instead of the manager doing it) and request that the name cards placed on his reserved tables. After fulfilling his requests, I noticed that the manager encountered the same problem with another group who reserved a section. I think the drinks are over-priced(most likely due to the area) and the music could be better — we went on a night where the DJs might have been practicing. I won’t be going back and will not recommend this place to anyone.

This place is seems to be really fun and eccentric… and it really is. The décor and atmosphere is very fun and youthful. But if I’m perfectly honest, I wasn’t super thrilled to be there for an entire evening. Perhaps I have relatively petty reasons why I’m giving this place a 2 star rating… but I have to go with what I think. Meh. I’ve experienced better. I found this place fairly expensive. I know shoreditch is a pretty expensive place to drink, but I thought that the prices given to me at the bar is more than I’d expect. Also, I was wary that the bartenders were making some mistakes with pricing. A friend of ours bought 2 drinks, a gin and tonic and a beer… but the price the bartender gave my friend was for a double gin and tonic and a beer. I know mistakes happen, but there is a pretty big price difference and if you’re not careful or paying attention, you could be paying way more. I ordered only a side of fries, and it took ages for it to arrive. It was relatively early on in the evening and the bar wasn’t so packed. So I’m not sure why it took so long. But they did come hot and very salty. It was not served with ketchup, but with sweet chilli sauce and mayo. Tasted pretty good… but anything tastes pretty good if you’re hungry! Lastly, the main reason why I didn’t like to drink here was that seating arrangements were rather uncomfortable. The tables would be set quite low and you would sit on small stools. Some tables were old barrels, so there would be loads of stools crowded in a cornered barrel. The way that the seating was set up would actually make you very slouched and it was uncomfortable to sit and chat with friends. Perhaps I’m being a bit finicky, but honestly the seating arrangements at this bar was so uncomfortable. If you were going to be there for a couple drinks, it’s great, but the fact I was there for the entire evening was just physically uncomfortable. If this place had more comfortable chairs or sofas, I probably would have given this place a better rating…

It’s times like these I despair that ‘psychedelic vintage music venue’ is not a category on Unilocal.Zigfrid von Underbelly looks like an emo hunting lodge meets rocker set. And unlike quite a few places in the area, it feels very genuine rather than what often comes across as over-done, artificial hipster quirkiness. Definitely A+ for effort on the décor and vibe! Great concept which uses the top part as a restaurant/lounge/bar and the downstairs(Underbelly) for gigs and other local artists. There are surfboards on the ceiling, dusty-looking armchairs, with carved wood tables, and heavy curtains partitioning the areas. Oh, and don’t forget the buffalo skull. The Underbelly was just right for our company of 6 or 7 people. Although it was busy and the music is loud, there was plenty of breathing room and we even found places to sit; however, we were there on a weekday both times. Prices are fine for the area and it’s open late so definitely a good Hoxton destination post a late-running work party or for a drink with friends. Looks like they do some great local musicians downstairs which often don’t have a cover charge so will have to check that out(along with the food) next time we are having a late one nearby.

I have loved this place for years — it is one of the only original places left in Hoxton! Although it is a really cool place, it has an unpretentious vibe, which I love. It’s known as a music venue — I have seen so many awesome bands here in the Underbelly and they also have DJ nights upstairs playing electro house and stuff like that. I like that you can pretty much sit here all day on the sofas, chilling with friends, and no one will bother you. The staff are great and know their stuff — they are really on the ball with cocktails. The best is their Lemon Meringue Pie — I have never tasted anything like it anywhere. Love love love. I had never actually eaten here until the other day and I can now vouch for the Big Ziggy burger — it’s so yummy. I just thought it would be all kind of standard greasy pub food but the waiter was telling us how everything is homemade. Can’t believe more people don’t know about this place as a food joint — it’s really reasonable too — the burger was only £9! Such a great place to hang all day, then watch a band later on. It’s got an outside bit too.

This place is really awesome for a night out, whether you’re starting the evening with some food, or ending it with live music(we did both). The food isn’t fussy or extra special, but what it delivers it does just as you’d want — amazing pizzas, generously topped nachos, and a Ziggy burger that is out of this world. They also have some nice ales from Hoxton brewery nearby. From the outside it might look a bit dark and more like a music venue, but there’s actually a cool eclectic vibe to the interior that makes it fun to sit and catch up with mates in. I recommend coming here for somewhere to eat and a few cocktails, then seeing where the night takes you around East London.

I absolutely love this place. The décor is awesome, the cocktails are great, bar staff always friendly(not that common in London). A great vibe, with music downstairs. We booked an area for 50 quid which is then put onto a table behind the bar when you turn up. Great way to organise a night with mates. Will keep coming back over an over!

I ended up at Zigfrid von Underbelly on Valentine’s Day for a CouchSurfing party. Considering I had nothing better to do on that particular Saturday night in London, I have to say I had a good time. Got there early and it was easy to get a beer, so I ended up chatting with my bartender who was from Budapest where I spend most of my time. She had no Hungarian beers, so I had a Czech beer. Expensive in my world, but decently priced in London. It got pretty crowded later, not sure if that’s normal for a Saturday, but not too busy that I couldn’t deal. I could definitely see myself going back here if I was back in London.

Amazing place with really funny furniture and decorations. The cocktail list is pretty extensive but not too expensive. Also had dinner here– the chickpea burger was a bit gross but everything else tasted really good. Good atmosphere on a Friday night.

My brother and I split the Ziggy burger and a margarita pizza. I also had the honey & fig cheesecake for dessert. The food was good, not great which is to be expected with pub food. I was more impressed with the choice of décor. I imagine it’s a better spot to drink at.

While the upstairs area ha the most amazing sofas, and a lovely atmosphere for a proper catch up with friends, the downstairs is an amazing gig space. Upstairs are is not loud, and you can keep a conversation flowing without the need to yell, which is quite useful if that’s why you went out. Was quite disappointing that they had run out of Guinness towards the end of the evening — definitely not ideal, but to be fair they did put a generous amount of blackcurrant syrup in my Guinness the first time around. Didn’t order any food there, but nibbled on the pizza that my friend ordered. Despite it being extremely thin, it was lovely or maybe I was just tooo hungry)… the food came quite quickly as well. I really enjoyed the toilets at the venue(I know — weird), but I could hardly resist taking a selfie there — broken pieces of glass all over the walls looked really awesome…

I like Zigfrid. Weirdly, I’d never really noticed it on Hoxton Sq, I guess normally I just waltz right into Hoxton Bar and Grill. But good news folks, there’s another good place to party on the square. I love the weird décor and lighting, complete with moose heads, old furniture and psychadelic items dotted around. They make a mean rum and coke, and that’s important. I can’t speak for other cocktails, drinks or food because I didn’t sample any. Maybe I had a tequila. Or maybe not. I’m uncertain. It was late, what can I say? Oh, and it’s open until at least 2, maybe later. It’s busy, with lots of fun people inside. I’ll be back.

On holiday in London, and this was definitely my favorite bar. After a trek through what seemed like miles of corporate buildings and track homes from London’s touristy center, we finally reached the one bar I had decided I had to visit on the trip, and I was ready to complain about something. Really, anything. My feet ached. I was hungry. I was thirsty. I was carded for the first time ever in London. But the moment I stepped into the dimly lot Zigfrid von Underbelly, I forgot about all of that. The interior has a cool mismatched vintage vibe, and the crowd on a Sunday night was just as diverse. If you’re going to order food, find your table and then order at the bar — they’ll ask for your table number, so have it in advance. We cashed in on the happy hour specials and tried a couple of their cocktails which were both pretty good. I had the chicken burger, which wasn’t bad. It was your standard bar food, but prepared well. What really sold me though was the atmosphere. The bartenders were really friendly and since it was Sunday, they were attentive as well. The armchairs are the comfiest armchairs I’ve ever sat in, and overall, the bar has an unpretentious, yet cool vibe to it. Definitely the highlight of my trip to London, and I only wish I had a chance to go to one of the shows here.

Used to be our favourite on Hoxton Square. Unfortunately this place is tarnished by ignorant and aggressive bouncers with their weird door policy. Bar staff too busy chatting each other than serving customers. Slowest place in Shoreditch. Being a busy place shouldnt be an excuse for them to be rude to customers.

Recently went here for a private party with open bar. The venue knew there were more than 100+ guests expected but only hired/brought in 2 bartenders. Needless to say it was chaos. The bartenders seemed to be lost and stunned and didn’t know how to deal with the crowd. First off, I blame the manager for not bringing in more staff. When we went upstairs to complain, the manager actually swore at one of our party using the F word. Needless to say, we’ll never go back and I would highly recommend not hiring this venue for future parties. And did I say the manager on duty was an ass? Abysmal.

I went to an event here the other day which was held in the basement bar at Zigfrid’s, so not really able to write a full review. There’s a lot to like about this place, but on this occasion Ziggi was greatly let down by the quality of drinks. Trust me, I know the taste of leftover white wine given another lease of life with the help of crème de cassis but I resent being sold kir in place of rose, especially at £5.80 a pop! I didn’t make a fuss as it was a business function, but won’t be coming here again.

I spend NYE2010⁄11 here, but this isn’t my first time spending New Years in this bar! Back in the day, it was either here or the Dragon bar for a free New Years evening. Well… free to get in. But when I first started coming to this bar, they had just redesigned it to be this sleek modern establishment, upon my return many moons later they have again redesigned this place to be super funky! I love it! It’s got the cool and funky NYC vibe about this bar, so much so, i will return on a normal Friday. And a great large dancy area downstairs! Finally, a bar that has changed for the better in this area!
