I once fell over standing up from the picnic tables at the Roman Fort and feared to have broken my arm, I received no sympathy from my comrades,(We had been drinking; it turns out I was actually fine) I feel a duty to forcibly point out there is No Fort just bumpy ground, so it requires a bit of imagination. The area itself if very nice and opens out to Orchard Fields which leads to Willow Woods. So, yeah, go here for a day out it is OK. Anyway there is no fort, do not forget that.

One of the good things about a visit to Malton is that yuo can get there by train or bus if you wish. A visit to the Roman fort in old malton can be combined with a visit to the museum to see the Roman artefacts. You can buy a town trail and the walk takes in the fields but I also bought a seperate sheet about the fort but it was some years ago ago I so hope they are still available. Actually once you get there the there are boards guiding you around the site which offer a wealth of imformatio. You can still see the outline of the ramparts and the board explains where you are. it is quite an experience to stand there and imagine Roman soldiers on the same spot. I is atmospheric and peacefull and on a fine summers day is a nice retreat and a step back in time in any season.
