Every vegetarian in Manchester totally *must* visit Anand’s, which is easily the vegetarian highlight of Rusholme’s curry mile — a 100% vegetarian Indian café-restaurant and delicatessen. One speciality here are deep fried and steamed Indian savouries — various pakora(potato, aubergine, stuffed chilli, dhal), various vegetable cutlets, dhokla. All of these items present an extremely severe challenge to replicate at home, and are thus perfect if you are looking for something a bit different. The way I did it was the server filled a paper bag with savouries, which are sold by weight and *extremely* reasonably priced given the labour-intensive cooking involved. Back home, whilst the savouries warmed in the oven, I rustled up some plain basmati and quick cooking veg. Served with some chutney, the range of flavours and textures was completely outstanding. I would definitely plan hosting an evening party for friends based around Anand’s savouries. As Alfie mentioned, Anand’s offer a limited range of homemade sweets. Anand’s make the usual Indian breads daily, plus a rotating menu of four different vegetarian curries each day. I spoke at length with the owner and everything is prepared either that morning or the evening before which clinches the deal for me. Having discovered Dosa Xpress just a few weeks ago, I seem to be on a lucky streak for discovering vegetarian-friendly places which fit my tastes to a T!

Think very vegetarian Indian cuisine, a total contrast from the usual curries enveloping the Curry Mile. The speciality of this place is the ‘chats’-which would be a spiced, sweet sour, crunchy mixture of some chick peas probably with Indian snacks and sauces. It’s a little difficult to describe but it is a must when you eat there! If you like different, and think you have the penchant for variation, please try the many different ‘chats’. Other than that it has sweets and drinks. Anand’s also has a fashion store selling bargained clothes. Everything about this place is light– The food in your belly and the prices on your wallet. It took me a while to spot this, as its pretty much merges with the many well-lit shops along the path, but once tried, I keep going back for more!

Right next door to Anand’s fashion is Anand’s Deli. Anand’s fashion sells cheap clothes and Anans’s Deli sells cheap food. But whilst Anand’s fashion has a ridiculously wide range of various garms, where you are bound to find some bargain amongst the heap of unsuitable ensembles, Anand’s Deli offers the most limited range of nourishment and sustenance I have ever seen. Strangely this is not because the shop is small. They can’t use this excuse because the shop is big, subsequently invalidating the claim that its small. Whereas all the other sweet delis in the area(this is largely what Anand’s is) have unbelievable piles of sweet delicacies piled high, Anand’s stock consists of a few cabinets of snacks. Probably less that I have in my fridge. Compared to this supply, they have so many tables that I wonder, if all seats were simultaneously filled, would they have enough food for everyone? Perhaps they keep it back stage or something… Still, quality doesn’t matter when you’ve got quality does it? And all of Anand’s snacks are well worth trying. Staff are very friendly and you will definitely go away with a sticky smile dans votre visage(on your face).
