Where can you sip Timmermans fruit beer whilst listening to a mostly Mancunian music soundtrack and observing a very odd Chinese zombie ninja movie where a guy punches another in the head until his head pulsates and goes all weird? At Base Bar, that’s where! There are a few bars worth checking out on Charles Street and this is one of them. Base is fairly new and you have to take a little set of stairs downwards to this quirky little place where they mix band posters with a couple of TVs and interesting décor. The bar staff are super friendly, and as well as plenty of places to sit, propping up the bar is equally pleasant. The bottled beer range is excellent and while they might not be the cheapest in the Oxford/Wilmslow Road Corridor, overall it’s a great value night out because of the vibe. And if it wasn’t for Base, I’d never have discovered The Chameleons.(I know. Bad Mancunian.) Lovely!

Descend the steps and enter the underground bar known as Base where live music and dj sets will await you. Posters of Siouxsie Sioux, Johnny Cash and PJ Harvey are just some of those adorning the dark red walls subtly lit by chinese lanterns and provides just the right atmosphere to get cosy on one of the leather couches and get lost in the music. It wasn’t too busy when I visited and there was quite an eclectic crowd, friends and families of the artists playing and people there just to enjoy an evening of live music, a nice relaxed atmosphere. The bar is fully stocked with the usuals, a cocktail menu and the delicious Stowford Cider and be sure to notice the Storm Trooper behind the bar. The café bar is situated under Khans Indian restaurant and apparently they will deliver you a curry to your table downstairs, I must try that one evening! Situated just off Oxford Road, round the corner from the BBC building, take a chance and pop in down one night.
