When I need a fix of 60s garage, Rockabilly or Girl Groups, I always head to Beatin’ Rhythm. Hidden away down a side street, this place is well worth seeking out, especially if you love vinyl! There’s boxes and boxes of the stuff, from rare psych, 60s pop and Rockabilly 7 to weird and wonderful LPs. There’s also a good selection of CDs. It’s particularly good for picking up cool Ace Records compilations and reissues. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, the guys that work here are lovely and always willing to offer advice. There’s usually a great tune playing too, so you can shimmy while you browse the shelves. No wonder this place is one of my favourite record shops!

Beatin’ Rhythm is, quite simply, the best record shop in Manchester. From floor to ceiling, it’s teaming with 45s, LPs and CDs. Prices range from singles for £1 right up to super sought after soul rarities and psych singles. The staff are refreshingly unpretentious(which is something of a godsend in Manchester) and are ready to help you out with that tune you half-remember the melody of, or on hand to help you navigate your way through the hundreds of boxes. Of course, this all talk of someone who has frequented the world’s record shops — the very best thing about Beatin’ Rhythm is that, even if you’ve never been amongst the odd world of the record collector, Karl & Co are behind the desk ready to hold your hand through the murky world of record shops. For beginners and veterans, Beatin’ Rhythm is the perfect record shop. Be prepared to melt your card.

A treasure chest for record collectors, crate diggers and deejays, Beatin’ Rhythm is the essential place to go if you have any interest in 50s rock and roll, doo wop, girl groups, rockabilly, funk, southern soul, northern soul and country. There’s a great selection of CDs selling everything from original Stax, Motown and Decca albums to compilations and box-sets. The real reason to go however, is for their truly awesome selection of vinyl 45s. We’re talking dozens of crates of original and re-pressed 45s in alphabetical order and genres. After a copy of Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’ or Brenda Holloway’s ‘Every Little Bit Hurts’? Step this way…

If you have the somewhat eccentric spectrum of vinyl addition, then this is your mini Mecca to visit and absorb in true train-spotting fashion the delights that are yours to finger with your shaky & sweaty digits. Get excited, get very excited… you can listen to as many tracks as you want, and due to the über friendly vibe of this place will not have some wanna be DJ breathing down your neck a la HMV. I always go here to find a quirky tune as a unique gift for a friend, or just trawl, listen and purchase something that will instantly transport me back to memories with such vivid clarity, an experience that only music can provide! Long live the 45!

I don’t have decks but my friend is far far cooler than me and does! It was with him that I went to Beatin’ Rhythm Records. This was the first record shop he had been to in Manchester to add to his ever expanding collection. I have it on good authority that this place stocks a great variety of record’s he had been seeking out for quite a while. The place oozes coolness but maybe that’s just the simple fact that I am always impressed by little shops tucked away in the Northern Quarter. I walked away promising myself I would buy myself some decks… here I am 6 months later deckless! Although I probably wont be needing to go back anytime soon Beatin Rhythm Records is cool with great staff, great music and in a great location.

A real record store, this place even smells authentic. It stocks 1960s soul, doo-wop, northern soul, blues, country, girl bands and rock ‘n’ roll on vinyl and CD, and carries the biggest rare 45s section in the UK. A fantastic place to spend an afternoon trawling. Even if you don’t have decks or a record player, you can always stand by the window and try to look cool.
