Charlies is a guaranteed goodnight. Bit of a mixed crowd, dodgy bar and no card machine at the bar is only negatives. Good song range, great atmosphere but have a few somewhere else before to get you on your merry singing way. I hate singing but i love it at charlies and even i sing every now n then!

Yes I vaguely remember this place… a bit dark. a bit seedy… full of extremely drunk people. just as a Karaōke bar should be basically. The evening was all the more memorable for my friend Ruth encountering the Christian who she’d phoned up at 4 o’clock in the morning just a week before demanding Jesus’ method for turning water into wine. Obviously the Christian didn’t want to give away the fact that it was just a fairly tale so was no help whatsoever. Anyway definitely check out Charlie’s for something a bit different in Manchester.

Charlie’s Karaōke Bar is a real one of a kind. Allegedly run by Chinese gangsters(although you didn’t hear that from me), it prides itself on being one of the strangest, kitschest and altogether gaudiest venue in Manchester. All of the décor here is massively over-the-top — everywhere you turn, your eyes are assaulted by baroque pillars, gilt mirrors and chaise lounges. Such faux 1920s opulence makes it the perfect place for saucy cabaret nights such as the legendary Whim Wham Club — although I’ve been to numerous electro disco nights here and had just as much fun dancing to strange beepy music in a room which looks like a tart’s boudoir. Whilst I do like Charlies, it does have it downsides. Booze can be slightly too expensive for what it is, and whenever I’ve ordered a Whiskey & Coke here, it’s always been served to me flat and with a scowl. And due to it not being the largest of places, it can get incredibly busy incredibly quickly — I have been known to dance on a chair here because there was no room on the dancefloor! Oh — and watch out for the toilets too. All too often you have to queue for ages only to be faced with a broken cubicle door, leaking sinks and no toilet paper. Still — it’s pretty much impossible to have a bad night at Charlie’s for all its faults. Just be sure to get there early, slump on a chaise lounge and soak up the atmosphere.

Charlie’s is one of the kitschest venues in Manchester! With gaudy wallpaper, vintage furniture and mirrors everywhere, it’s a bit like a 1920’s speakeasy. Hardly surprising, then, that it is home to the Whim Wham Club, a saucy vintage cabaret night. There are a couple of other regular club nights here too, including Naïve Melody. But even though Charlie’s is a venue with tonnes of character and some great club nights, there are a couple of things that annoy me about it. Firstly, the bar doesn’t offer a great selection of drinks, and the booze they do have can be a little on the expensive side. And the club is a little small, too. Sometimes the tiny size of it feels quite cosy and intimate, but other times you’ll just think it’s too cramped. It depends on the night, I suppose!

Now this is slightly embarrassing… but I do LOVE Karaōke. Unfortunately however Manchester seems to lack many decent karaokes. Of the few I have come across they have either been pokey, slightly scalliesque or have had only a few English songs! So to be honest to come across Charlies was a joy to me and my musical pals(if you can call our singing musical). This place has a good selection of songs and a great atmosphere. I think the most important part of Karaōke is to make you feel you feel confident enough to get up… the crowd that gather here definitely do. So get some dutch courage down you and sing your little hearts out here ! :)

Hidden away just off Princess Street, Charlies is fairly non discript from the outside and is easily missed unless you’re looking. Whether its postioning was tactical or not I’ve idea but what I can tell you is that this little gem has a fantastically fun and friendly atmospere that is helped hugely by the fact that it’s not somewhere idiots stumble into accidently on a ramdom crawl. Offering entertainment throughout the week including Karaōke and a 70’s, 80’s &90’s chart club night, Charlies plays host to the hugely popular ‘Heart of Soul’ club night on Saturdays, playing R’n’B, funk and Sweet Soul music. Everybody there is a have-a-go hero, X Factor it isn’t but Y-not Factor it certainly is! Get your tonsils warmed up and get down there.

Pretty bloody funny karaōke place just off Princess Street, right in central Manchester. Funny because, as much as you are keen to do your best rendition of Sweet Child O’ Mine, the proprietor, Charlie himself, will insist on having a dabble around every 3rd song! Still, great to see someone who loves their work so much! Classic night out.
