Probably one of the best EATs I’ve been to — this is based purely on the fact that it’s not particularly busy during peak lunchtime hours. Is this a silly thing to throw 4 stars at? Perhaps. Perhaps I am high on the fact it’s almost the weekend and completely disregarding the fact that EAT is yet another chain and, on most occassions, another place where I end up stressed, not knowing which queue to stand in, and ultimately hungry due to my hatred of mayonnaise. This branch, set off from both Deansgate and St Ann’s Square, is hidden from the public eye. It’s small but actually well set out; there are no chairs or tables in your way and most tables are two seaters, recognising the general eating habits of the working people. There’s something quite odd/guilt inducing about sitting on a four seater if there is only one or two of you. Due to the size there is no ‘fast track’ till point found in some EAT branches, meaning you know where you’re going and what you’re going there for. To the till, to pay. Food is standard EAT fayre — salads, baguettes, soups, and even hot pies. Sadly I didn’t spot the behind-the-till soup or pies until I’d got there and handed my panini over for heating. Sigh, I’ll just have to go again. My mexican chicken panini, chosen based on no mayonnaise and some additional veggies, was actually pretty tasty, with black beans and sweetcorn making me feel a touch healthier, though soft white bread always makes me feel heavy and a tad guilty during the afternoon. Free wi-fi is advertised but it’s one of those jobbies where you have to sign in through a chosen outlet and, if not a member of whatever, you have to make yourself one. Yawn. Too much hassle when I’m grappling with a panini. To paraphrase Fleetwood Mac, you will never break the chain so you might aswell find the best of a bad bunch.

Eat Ltd is a great chain of restaurants for those who want something different, healthy and quick for lunch. They serve a range of hot and cold foods including freshmade soups, pies, sandwhiches, salads and noodle based lunch packs. They also have a good variety of drinks and sweets/cakes. My personal favourites are the crayfish noodle salad which is spicey and fresh, light yet filling, and the pot au chocolate(£1) which is a real calorific treat of smooth thick chocolatey yummyness. You can eat in for a slight premium on the food, or you can take out. The staff are, um, they serve their purpose I suppose, I can’t think of anything good or bad which sticks out. You should be able to get a flavoursome light lunch for under a fiver.

Eat is actually a very good little sandwich chain in the city which offers great-tasting sandwiches, salads, pies and general lunch fare. The philosophy behind Eat seems to be that of ‘eating well’; the sandwiches go beyond the limp offerings of Tesco et al and just genuinely feel more fresh and healthy. However, the price is far too high and paying over a fiver for just a sandwich and a drink is something that is a little hard to swallow. This makes Eat good for the occasional lunchtime treat and little else, which is a shame as there is a great lack of decent little lunchtime eateries in Manchester. That said, the food packs a lot more flavour than the regular pre-packaged sandwiches and doesn’t feel as cloying in the mouth; it’s definitely worth the extra money and is a suitable contender for the likes of Pret.

Another chain of sandwich stores descend on our city, although this is claimed to be an independent family run chain which I hope means the same original love goes into over 90 stores currently sat in the uk. Not bad for a concept only 10 years old. The punters must like something about them? I personally give them the thumbs up due to the genuinely tasty food they serve and the minimal store designs which lull you into the froth of your ‘Paul Cambacino’. The coffees are in fact excellent — fair trade and organic milk to boot. It’s also good to see them serve Chai Tea(Chai latte in this case) a much under rated brew in my opinion. Quite a cosmic, Asian experience and one I would recommend. Of course soups(a concept I still fail to grasp with open arms despite being bombarded with requests to try this liquid fancy) are honoured alongside a decent range of sandwiches(I’d whole heartedly recommend the crayfish, lime and coriander sandwichapproaching perfection in the sandwich world. Toasties and wraps also make guest appearances in the sleek refrigeration units parked in store. The food is assuredly fresh each day and the bread cooked in store each morningunlike other mega branded competitors I’m quite partial to a little high, pine stool surroundings so my boat is ticked here also. The sandwiches here ain’t cheap but worth the extra for the delicious food and pleasant surrounds.

Mmmm. tasty lunchtime food, all made freshly on the premises. Hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soups and pies, this place is great for a change. Its really quite expensive — have spent £6−7 on lunch there before, but i still like to treat myself occasionally. All the food they produce is so flavourful and tasty, I think its better than Pret personally.
