Meh is definitely an apt word to describe Envy. It almost tempts you in with the promise of good clothing, and then you step inside and you realise it’s a lot of rubbish. There are a few decent brands mixed up with some that you would loudly exclaim«HUH!!!» at, which is sneaky like snake, but doesn’t do enough to detract on just how, well, rubbish it is. Eugh the denims, seriously, it’s like HQ paid someone to take a cheese grater and some bleach and go wild on the obvious fades on every pair of jeans in the place. Everything just looks cheap and nasty, even if it’s not really the bottom of the brand pile, it’s as if they pick up all the detritus the other stores like USC or even TK Maxx for that matter, do not want, and think hmmm, we’ll stock it here. Point is, it’s bland, and there are far more pleasant places to buy designer items from in Manchester, farmore pleasant places to buy designer items from in the Arndale. And you all thought the Arndale sucked.

I used to work in Envy and let me tell you the clothes are rubbish… so glad I can get it off my chest finally. There is nothing to be Envious of when you think of Envy because its just overpriced tat. Furthermore the store card they will try to sell to sell to you has a horrendous interest rate attached to it so don’t be tempted. It just adds insult to injury that this one is placed in the Arndale. I could not dream up this nightmare. Don’t go let it close like its been threatening to do for ages now!

Is the name intended to describe the stores feelings towards other retailers or the way you will feel when your dressed like an Envy lemon and somebody passes you looking all ‘non twatish’? Who knows, it’s a mystery wrapped in an enigma zipped up in a Teddy Smith fleece. The stock-list reads like a roll call of the brands you wore at school when it was considered high fashion to dress like a hobo from the future. The sign in the window might read ‘Store Closing Soon’ but trust me, it’s been closing since the day it opened.
