A family owned business since 1969, I used to work round the corner at Granada Studios(the good olé days) this was my local old fashioned fish and chip shop. A Friday crush I think :) Reasonable price and fresh cod served daily, they refurbished about 2 years ago. You can now eat upstairs in the restaurant areas(very nice) chips are fat and tasty. Sausages and fish are yummy too. The home made curry sauce and gravy is to shout about here. If your passing the definitely pop in and give this place a try. The only thing that stops me from giving in full marks is its always seems to be under staff and a bit of a wait for the food. It’s totally worth it though because it’s yummy

I have never been in the fish shop it’s self but I have had chips from here on a couple of occasions when in cask next door and they are really good. I would definitely go in though looks really clean and modern from the outside.

Fish was well done with traditional salt and vinegar. Cost was very reasonable at about 5.8 pounds. Had a deal set up with pub next door to take food over there and eat it which was nice. Wasn’t wrapped in newspaper like the good old days though.

Really good fish and chips right next door to Cask on Liverpool St… Cask allow you to eat your chippy tea in their bar — which makes the Friday night chippy ritual all the more pleasurable. Menu is exactly as you would expect — pies, battered sausage, cod, curry sauce and mushy peas — what else do you need! As a final note, I dont know how others feel about this, but in my opinion, the best chip is the chip that is tinged brown with a slight(only very slight!) flop. Fish Hut does have these, but when they are queued out, they maybe dont always let them cook long enough to get that nice light brown colour… shame but they are hardly the only chippy in Britain to do that!

First time visiting since it was refurbished earlier this year. Its a much nicer looking, modern place with the glass front. I didn’t eat in but I have seen the photos of the seating which looks nice. I had fish and chips and a portion of curry. The fish and chips were £4.90 which is little on the expensive side. Comparing this to another couple chippys in the city centre which are about £4-£4.40 — although they may have gone up in price since I last went. Not sure if Fish Hut have any offers on — didn’t see anything obvious. The curry was £1 sounds a lot but it was a large portion. As for the actual taste of the food, the fish and chips were OK. Nothing special. The curry was a bit too sweet.

There’s not many Fish & Chip shops in the City Centre, certainly that are worthy of the name, so Fish Hut is probably one of the best amongst a bad bunch. Having recently renovated(which seemed to take months), there’s not much that has changed apart from a smartening up of the main counter and upstairs seating area. The menu contains all the usual chippy suspects including some indecently large sausages(including battered, yay!) — they’re not exactly Bobby’s Bangers these, just your standard chip shop sausage. Chips can be hit and miss here, often undercooked for my tastes on a busy Friday lunchtime, if you visit on a less busy day you’re likely to get a better chip. The fish is decent, moist and the batter is crisp enough but nothing mindblowing. Prices are on the high end for a bog standard chippy, £3.10 for battered sausage & chips, a fiver for a regular fish & chips. There’s not a whole lot here to recommend, but at the same time it’s not dire and at least you can take them next door to cask to wash your chips down with a pint!

I have, I am ashamed to say, eaten at a Chip Shop twice this week. This does give a special power though — the power to review Chippies with astonishing prowess! My visit to the Fish Hut today was actually quite a surprise — it’s recently seen quite a face lift, both inside and out — gone are the grimy windows, the dingy counter and grungy posters(last one’s a bit of a shame actually, I really like those!). It’s in with the shiny glass, white walls and er… parallelogram shaped plates? You can eat in, or take away — unlike the good old days though, you can tell you can eat in; it wasn’t until today that I realised that there were tables! We ate in, and it was good; a portion of chips, battered sausage and scallop(the potato kind, not the sea food kind). The size was great, the chips were nice and hot with nary a green, black or oddly undercooked one in sight and the batter on the scallop and sausage was crispy and light. If you don’t fancy fish and chips(who are you kidding?) there’s actually a coffee shop upstairs too — I didn’t get anything this time, but I think I’ll be making a trip back because it smelt great! The coffee so shop was also doing baguettes and assorted sandwiches, so now you can suggest the chippy to even the most health conscious; safe in the knowledge that you can still get your plate of spuds…

I had to drop by the Victorian Market on Liverpool Street to pick up some art work before Christmas so witha colleague we dropped by at lunch… Well a cheeky Friday Chippy lunch was always going to win the day wasn’t it? The guy is super cool, the fish was cooked straight in front of us so we had to wait a bit but it was pretty good. The best dirty chippy let’s say. The Fish Plaice in Didsbury for now wins the best chippy, but this one won the day and was tasty, served with a healthy portion of chips(for a «small» portion). Tip: you can get your chippy and eat next door at Cask so long as you order a drink and you tidy up after yourself.

Finding oneself in Manchester on a workday at 1pm and not having made any sarnies that morning, it had to mean ‘Chippy Lunch’. The Fish Hut is really just a bog standard chippy, there’s nothing novel or fashionable about them as far as I could tell. The two guys behind the counter were friendly enough and the fish was freshly cooked so tasted very good. Expect to pay about a fiver for standard fish and chips, which, given the size of the cod, seemed pretty good. Tip: There’s a dining room upstairs if you don’t want to grab and run(signposted as ‘Dinning Room’ which amused me somewhat).

Was always the very best chippy, been using this chippy for over 25 years, but after a few change of hands things have changed, the opening hours have improved, now open more often which is great. I think it might be Eastern European owned now. Recently the restaurant upstairs has at last had a paint job so looks a lot better, but the front window still cracked! and not very safe if you have children. Service is now very hit and miss, depends when you go! Your order is now demanded as you enter, take your own drinks up with you! Pay before you eat, and the prices have shot up, plates have shrunk, the once great oval plate is now a round job, so you get a pile of food instead of a well presented meal. Pot of tea for one is now a small mug but still £1.50. Last time I went cost just under £13 for two, this time it was £16.30, long gone are the days when a chippy lunch was cheap, may as well go to a restaurant for a meal now. One final point, I love clean tables, and premises, but strongly object to strong smelling perfumed spray cleaners being used around you on other tables while trying to eat, it does not add to the flavour and enjoyment of the food.

This is what a real chippy should be like, all of you other fish and chip shops take note.

Sorry, Fish Hut, but you’ve lost a bit of your pazzazz. Once my favourite in Manchester, you’ve slipped a bit over the course of the past year. The fish doesn’t taste as good as I remember, nor do the chips. Was it you that changed, or me? I definitely got better service the last time around… long day behind the counter? Whatever happened, please change back — I really want to like this chippy! For now, even though Fish Hut is much closer to where I live, I’ll be getting my grub at Manchipster Plaice. Better quality, plus happy employees.

As I reviewed Lowry Fish Bar yesterday, I thought I’d do the same for Fish Hut. A bit of a chippy theme, why not. It was another of those ‘let’s share a few chips on the go’ moments for the boyfriend and myself, and he’d walked past Fish Hut several times meaning to try it. Talk about handily located! We were shopping along Deansgate and had to head this way anyway for the Castlefield Outdoor store. First off, location location location. I ruddy love Liverpool Road. And it’s right next to Cask, so you can get a nice pint once you’re stomach’s lined if you so fancy. We were taking our chips home and despite our shared aversion to takeaway chips in polystyrene cartons, they were still very tasty. They weren’t stingy on the salt and vinegar either! Never has cheap as chips been so appropriate. Happy full tummies all round…

Let’s be honest here: most chippies in Manchester are terrible. Most are of the Chinese variant. I love Chinese food, but I really do not like«soy fish and chips» — the batter often has that umami-ish taste which has no place near battered cod. Even most places that are real«chippies» in the area are pretty poor(or lack a phone and any comprehensible opening schedule — hello Kingfisher on Tib St). This place, though, has been pretty reliable the three times I’ve been there. A decent portion size; good chips without that cardboardy taste so prevalent elsewhere; and fresh fish with a nice light batter. The staff do seem a bit confused sometimes though.

All have to say is «WOW». The portion is huge for £5. The fish was cooked perfectly crunchyroll and soft. Its very tasty w/add of vinager and salt on the fish and chips.

Can’t beat fresh fish and chips and this place serves up a treat. There is an upstairs, which i didn’t visit, and the american fryer sells art, not from the shop, just some info he shared.

I just want to say one year on and Fish Hut is the bestest of fish and chip shops I’ve EVER experienced. Just please open up longer, 2 hours at lunch and 3 hours in the evening and not on Saturdays and Sundays is just not enough! I guess it helps to control the blocked arteries situation however.

I think Andrew must have caught them on a bad day because Fish Hut is usually immaculate. Being as they are my local Fish & Chips, and right next door to my favourite bar in Manchester, I often make them my last port of call on my way home. The fish is always large and gorgeous, and the chips are crispy and fat. It’s a tiny little shop with lovely staff, and a couple of tables outside as well for sunny days. To be honest though, you might as well walk 30 seconds down to the canal and sit on the old steps there facing out over one of the most picturesque areas of Manchester. Actually its got a Dining Room as well, but I have never been in it, as I always think a Fish & Chips should be consumed outside. Could be useful for rainy days though…
