This square is really boring and quiet all the time. This is quite a shame because it would make an ideal place for some cool bars and feels like it could develop into a cool little area for nights out. Its also not the shape of a square, so its conning everyone. Situated literally seconds walk from Deansgate in the direction of Piccadilly, it should be an ideal location. Unfortunately, the bars that have set up here, apart from one, are very disappointing. This exception is Taps, where you get to POUR your own beer and leave POOR because its expensive. There are several closed down bars and restaurants here too, so it could be that attempts to make the area popular have failed. As for the sunken grassy patch as seen on the photo, I don’t know who came up with it or who thought it was a good idea, but I don’t like them. They started well but forgot to finish their design with some seventeenth-century street performers, court clowns, and a stocks or hanging gallows

Overlooked by the imposing Great Northern building, Great Northern Square is a small square that is more like Piccadilly Gardens than Albert Square. In the middle there is a small, sunken section of grass, with concrete steps going down to it with the whole thing forming a miniature amphitheatre. It’s an original and different use for the space. If the Great Northern didn’t seem so dead and in need of regeneration at the moment I’m sure this pleasant, little square would be busier than it is at the moment.
