This place is really lovely, with attentive staff and good food. My only quibble is that at busier times it can get quiet loud, as lots of the tables are very close together. If you get a chance to enjoy the festive set menu make sure to get the nut roast — best I’ve ever had. Lots of yummy desserts on offer too, the lemon tart with a crème brûlée topping was SO good! The brownie is only for those who are sweet and chocolate fiends ;)

Another great experience at Greens. Got a table at 17.45 on a Sunday and already chocka. Had the goats cheese and tomato salad as I wasn’t very hungry. It was delicious, the basil worked so well with the cheese and there were three different types of tomato. Perfect! We shared the chocolate pot for dessert. Dark and rich. Yum yum yum! Veggies eat your heart out!

As a vegetarian I love Greens as I think it offers veggies gorgeous, tasty and inventive food at a reasonable price. The food is so good I usually find that most meat eaters I take there love it too so don’t be put off if you’re a bit of a carnivore. We went on a week night and were able to take advantage of their 2 courses for £12 menu. They offer it all day Mon and Tues and until 7pm on a Weds and Thurs night. The set menu had a limited choice but the food was excellent. My crispy Asian mushroom salad was full of flavour as was my carbonara. The ham had been replaced by veggie black pudding which believe me tasted much better than it sounded. The service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was laid back and chilled. The perfect way to spend an evening.

Well, I’m a meat eater. As others have suggested, and well the name, it really does give away that this place is sans meat. I love how they even have ‘scaring carnivores since 1998′ on their fliers. All I can say is that, I wasn’t scared. I’ve walked past for a number of years and wanted to go, and have heard fantastic things from various veggie mates independantly. From the moment you walk through the door, you’re hit with the smell of fantastic food. We’re in the right place for a feast, and a 3 course Christmas feast is chosen by both myself and companion. Really friendly service. Starters: Deep-fried oyster mushrooms with pancakes Main: Spinach, pistachio and feta filo pie with tomato and cinnamon sauce and cherry tomatoes. Desert: Sticky toffee pudding. Each course was perfect, and left me wanting more. We both wanted to try each others food! At £25 it’s possibly more than we’d normally spend but it certainly was extremly great food, in a good environment, with friendly smiley service. A xmas treat, that all other meals in 2015 will be compared with. Certainly a lovely place to visit for a a special treat at xmas. I can’t imagine there’s a better vegetarian restaurant in Manchester? Tip: Book ahead. This place is busy. They have web booking via their website, and phoned to confirm with us.

This was purely Mr Moss’s idea, what a thoughtful chap :) Despite my past history of being a vegetarian and a vegan it’s very rare these days I will choose a non fishy items off the menu! This place was fully packed, and had the Christmas vibe you want, with soft golden light, warmth from the kitchen and the beautiful small of nut roast :) Having mooched at the plentiful menu for a while we decided to choose the Christmas menu for £25 per head which offered a three course Christmassy meal. For starters I ordered the goats cheese balls, which were tasty but there were only three of them and they were quite small… I wish I had chosen Ian’s which was the equivalent of Peking duck with pancakes but made out of dried shredded mushrooms instead. The main I chose this really tasty pecan nut roast which ticked all the right boxes. but after copious amounts of red wine I still felt like I could handle the dessert… the. choccy orange which tasty with the raspberry reduction on side. Overall a very nice place, which is quite expensive considering the ingredients… but the level of care, brilliant waitressing and taste of the food I can see why. It’s hard to keep vegtables natural while being creative and tasty at the same time! I recommend coming here if you are even non veggie, this is fine dining at its best.

Love this place. We went for a birthday recently and the food was amazing! Really friendly and helpful staff. We had 2 vegans in our party and the staff really went out of their way to check things and make sure their meals were right. I’d recommend Greens for vegetarians and meat eaters alike as the food is a treat: D

I’m no veggie but i heart this place!, the food was amazing and very flavour some. I had the Jamaican pepper pot stew for main which was wholesome, filling and nicely spiced. I had the peanut butter and jelly cheesecake for dessert which was calorie laden but deee-vine. Lots of the other dishes would have satisfied my normally meat based hunger so I’m going back to give them a whirl! Service was great and the staff are super sweet we were a group of 15 which can be challenging in a small restaurant!

Good food(I am a meat eater) and service friendly. Weird feelings about this restaurant because the food and everything about the evening is very good. But I am very very happy with the fact that I have been eating very health food. But I must mention that vegetarian black pudding starter is the best thing on the menu. Conclusion very good meal and nice ambience. But I feel great for stuffing my face, and I cant say that often !!!

For my first time in Manchester I decided to sample the delights of Greens, which has long been recommended to me as an amazing restaurant, as well as being vegetarian The trip from central Manchester to West Didsbury was well worth it as the food was among the best I’ve ever had It’s an unusual experience for me to be spoiled for choice on a menu and the range of dishes was superb. Man of the match stays, however has to go to the crispy oyster mushrooms with pancakes and plum sauce. A vegetarian alternative to Peking Duck. The mushrooms had a wonderful smoky taste to them and the pleasure of rolling the mushrooms, scallions and cucumber in the pancakes was one to savour

I don’t believe in reviewing a vegetarian restaurant as a vegetarian restaurant. That’s just silly. Food is food is food and… well… is it any good here? Yes. This ace little restaurant might not make the kind of food that would give a food critic a raging erection, but by God, the food is consistently great. Essentially, if you have working taste buds, you’ll clear your plate. One of things that always remains a favourite of people who eat here is the desserts. The list is long and they’re all excellent. It’s a very welcoming place and the staff are uniformly great. If you have a vegetarian friend that needs spoiling, take them here for sure. If you want a change from always ordering meat, then you’ll be very happy here. Highly recommended. Oh, and its owned by that Simon Rimmer fella who you might’ve seen on the tellybox putting up with Tim Lovejoy on a Sunday morning.

I am unashamedly the Deperate Dan of the meat eating world. I want steak, I want pork, I want chicken, I want lamb, I want anything that was once alive and is now dead for my capitalistic plate: I want cow pie. So when it was suggested to me that we book a table at Greens my immediate thought was ‘great, a night eating rabbit food, I’d eh– hem love to’. How wrong could I have been?! With a menu packed with inventiveness and flavour, I would say that the food here is the best vegetarian food I’ve ever tasted. At one point whilst munching through my Cheshire Cheese Sausages I started to contemplate whether in-fact one would ever need to eat a meat sausage again. They were seriously good. What bowled me over as well was the friendliness of our waiter. He must know just how damn good his food is, so could easily fall into the pompous attitude category of his unfortunate contemporaries across the road at The Lime Tree, but he was the opposite, a real ambassador for the restaurant. Going here felt like they were so happy to have you and like nothing was too much trouble, the epitome of good service. Whilst the clean, smooth, wine-glass-chinky atmosphere was the perfect match for the perfect sausage. Or non-sausage if you will. I’m not exactly converted to vegetarianism, but I’m certainly converted to Greens.

If you haven’t already been to Greens, you should do. I had always been intrigued by vegetarian food and had wondered just how many interesting meals could be cooked with pasta, tofu or quorn. My ignorance was shown up in its full glory when I visited Greens restaurant for the first time some 6 years ago. At that time, it was a single shop front, very small, rustic, bare floorboards and natural. My veggie friend had raved about it so much that finally I relented and tried it out. Now, I am sorry to sound so cynical but as a red-blooded meat eater, I have always been very been dubious about vegetarians and their cuisine. Pseudo vegetarians who lecture about animal cruelty whilst eating a chicken sandwich wearing leather shoes are frankly annoying. Now, genuine veggies who have ethical issues about consuming meat or have just made a lifestyle decision I will certainly listen to, so I went along to Greens and have been back several times. Since my virgin veggie visit, the restaurant has been expanded into the adjacent shop in recent years and given a contemporary facelift that makes it appealing to all. The menu is exclusively vegetarian with specials enhancing the a la carte. The highlight for me was the vegetarian black pudding. No, I didn’t think it was possible either, but it has to be eaten to be believed and impressed the most ardent carnivore of the family(no prizes for guessing who that might be!). The children were welcomed but were kept occupied so their behaviour was acceptable to the Didsbury crowd! The prices are standard for good quality food and the service was superb. I cannot pretend that I am a total veggie convert, but this restaurant has educated me that not all meals revolve around a sizzling steak. This is a top notch place to go and I agree with the Government on one thing– that we should all go Green(s)!

Well whaddya know? It’s another veggie restaurant. Let’s have a little look see if Didbury’s Greens is any good. The name, for starters, is very en vogue. Not only are we encouraged to eat our greens but to be ‘green’ nowadays is of muchos importance. If you want to make any carnivore in your life feel silly, Greens is the place to bring them. Their slogan should be ‘you won’t miss the meat’. The first thing you’ll notice in Greens is the warm atmosphere. It’s friendly, it’s welcoming, and it feels like both a casual café AND a restaurant. The food is hearty for those who think we veggies are all fainting from protein deficiencies… try vegetarian black pudding and lentil casserole with cornbread, or Cheshire cheese sausages with wholegrain mustard mash, beer gravy and tomato chutney, or a range of tarts and pies with great accompaniments, and in the evening you can chow down on Lancashire hot pot, veggie lasagne, griddled aubergine red curry, the options are endless. And I’ll hunt you down and nag you if you don’t try their garlic mayo, it’s far too delicious for words. Grab some sweet potato fries with that. You won’t regret it. As for puds you’re spoilt for choice with cheesecakes, crumbles, sticky toffee pudding, tiramisu or a range of cheeses with biscuits(Blacksticks silk, Lancashire crumbly and Guernsey gold brie). Anyone who thinks those who don’t eat meat are weakened by it should walk out of Greens after a slap up meal — you feel like you’ve got the strength of ten men. It effortlessly combines casual dining with a sense of occasion and I’ve been back countless times and accompanying carnivores have always been happy.

You don’t have to be vegetarian to love this innovative, lovely little restaurant. I was taken here a few years ago by a non-meat-eating-ex-boyfriend, and whilst he disappeared soon afterwards, my love for this place remained strong. What I like best about Green’s is that whilst its food isn’t particularly sophisticated, its always delicious. Their cheese and leek sausages and mash are especially delectable — indeed, when I took one of my carnivorous friends here, I had to restrain them from licking their plate! They also serve some of the best sweet potato fries I’ve ever eaten, and which are just made for mopping up Green’s delicious home made red pepper ketchup and garlic aioli. Add to this an extensive range of desserts(this is a restaurant which isn’t afraid of a little cream and butter) and this is one restaurant which you’ll be leaving with a very happy, bulging belly. The staff are also friendly and knowledgeable, and always seem willing to go the extra mile to make sure that you enjoy your meal and have the best dining experience possible. And if that wasn’t enough, it’s also the only restaurant I’ve ever been to which serves Calvados — something which definitely makes it a five star establishment in my eyes!

I’m a vegetarian. Well, pescetarian. Every time I go out for a meal with my Grandad, he phones up the pub first to check that they’ll have something veggie for me, and they always do. You see, nowadays I never struggle to find something I like on a restaurant menu, and as quite an indecisive person it actually helps me to narrow down the options from the start to those with the(v) by the side — well, excluding that ‘vegetarian favourite’ nut roast. Favourite?! The fact that Greens only sells veggie food and that there is not a nut roast in sight, make this a nightmare for anyone in the company of an indecisive vegetarian. Gnocchi with mushrooms in a red wine sauce, sweet potato parcels, spinach and feta filo pie, Cheshire cheese sausages and mustard mash… I can definitely recommend the red thai curry with aubergine, but each and every one of the dishes looked flavoursome and diverse enough to please(but maybe not convert) even the most dedicated of carnivores. The atmosphere and service are great too. At around £11 for a main, it’s not the cheapest of places to eat, but you get what you pay for. There’s nothing wrong with scruffy hippy veggie cafés like the one next to the University library, but even vegetarians like to go out for a posh meal once in a while.

This restaurant is co-owned by TV chef Simon Rimmer, Greens has been part of the Manchester dining scene for 18 years and serves some amazing food. and completely breaks the mould when it comes to the silly ideas that vegetarian food is mostly two things. brown, and boring! Greens has been one of the few restaurants that personally for me been consistent in offering interesting dishes, they are healthy, yet extremely tasty! and you get a nice quirky dining environment. Their legendary starter of crispy mushroom pancakes(trust me, it’s good) tastes just as great as crispy duck, and their Cheshire cheese sausage and mash is divine for those who like a bit of spicy relish on their stodge! You will also find a good selection on fine wines and juices, beers and desserts!

Visited this restaurant with friends(one is vegan so thought it would give him a fair bit of choice). The ambience of the restaurant is nice but the food is, well, just ok really. Flavours within the food weren’t anything to write home about. Probably my biggest gripe is the staff. They looked as though they’d been slapped repeatedly with a wet kipper. Felt like we were ‘bothering’ them when asking for some table water. Quite pricey too considering it’s just veg within the food! To end on a positive note, my vegan friend thought it was brilliant, so if you are vegan, fill your boots up, carnivores beware …

Greens is everything a vegetarian restaurant should be. It’s classy, inviting and serves fantastic food that even the most rabid meat eater would never look down on. Meals are satisfying, tasty and made from fresh and lovely ingredients. I tried something here I’d never had before: vegetarian black pudding. Fantastic. I’m not sure I’d have it again, but the very fact that they’ll experiment with such daring concepts is testament to how great this place is. The friendly waiting staff even removed a wasp for us while it was buzzing around our table(humanely, of course!) I cannot recommend this place highly enough and will return if I ever have reason to visit Manchester again in future.

I have to say, when I’ve been really hungry in the past, I’d settle for nothing less than a generous helping of meat in its many forms — pie, burrito, sandwich, roast. You’d always have to drag me kicking and screaming to a vegetarian establishment because in my very weakened condition I couldn’t ever imagine being satisfied. Well, I take it all back. To the staunchest meat eaters out there — you don’t have to be a vegetarian to thoroughly enjoy Greens, in fact I guarantee you won’t even be missing the meat. I started with deep-fried oyster mushrooms with Chinese pancakes and plum sauce — perfectly cooked and seasoned. For my main I couldn’t resist the Cheshire Cheese sausages with mustard mash and beer gravy. Very filling, and full of flavour. The dessert looked very indulgent too — Brownies, Eton Mess, Plate of Cheeses — but I just didn’t have the room! I loved the atmosphere in here, the dining area has stripped floors and warm wallpapers and artwork, the staff are very helpful and I promise you, the cooking is so good you won’t miss the meat at all. 2 courses and wine came to under £25 a head which was very reasonable for the overall experience.

Mmmm, Greens. Lots of tasty vegetarian food for the fully-fledged meat eater. If you’re after ‘health food’ this is not the place for you. Cream, butter, cheese, and not a single bit of tofu in sight. This is cleverly crafted food, served up beautifully in a stylish environment that leaves me feeling super-happy every time I go. Their legendary starter of crispy mushroom pancakes(trust me, it’s good) tastes just as great as crispy duck, and their cheshire cheese sausage and mash is divine for those who like a bit of spicy relish on their stodge. The desserts are always top class too. The only sadness for me is that it used to be a BYO wine place, whereas now you can’t do that, making it a much more expensive night out. That said, it’s still good value for money and well worth a trip out to West Didsbury.
