Blyth Art Shop Blyth’s Art Shop seems like a serious sort of art shop for serious sort of artists. Everything is very ordered, neat and clinical. They’ve got great ranges of paints, pencils and pens, as well as a downstairs section with artist accessories like folders, paper and even natural light bulbs so you can paint in natural light late into the night. There’s two or three staff around to help you with any queries you might have in my experience they’ve usually got the time and patience to help you out properly. I can’t help feeling that Fred Aldous across Stevenson square isn’t just lots more fun, more well stocked and generally more exciting though.

Well lo and behold, in culture week I found myself in yet another art shop. Must be all those art galleries inspiring me. Blyth’s is a prime peach in the Northern Quarter, the very centre of almost painfully boho artsy hipness, so fashionable you just might cry. I swear, every time I visit the NQ I get outfit ideas just from people watching. That’s beside the point. Blyth’s is darn good value. It knows that a great portion of its customers are art students and caters for them accordingly with its varied range and excellent prices. Canvases, easels, drawing boards, as well as the materials to slosh some great art all over them, all in stock. They even do mail orders too, so even if you’re nowhere nearby you can still make use of those fabulous discounts. The gallery is adorable too, so you can browse art for inspiration while you’re gathering supplies. So, low prices, a family-fun business, student friendly and staff who are knowledgeable AND pleasant? Can’t go far wrong here now, can we.

You can’t go wrong with Blythes. A Manchester art student staple, this store has saved me countless times. The staff in here are extremely knowledegable and will even order in special materials and papers if they’re out of stock. They’ve got just about type of paint from Winsor to Newton and Rembrandt paints, brushes, chalks, gouaches, water colours and graphic supplies and a large range of papers and canvases. I’ve bought specialist 300gsm paper in here for a menu project and special mounting glue. I had help with the measuring and cutting free of charge and advice of mounting my images. I highly recommend this store.

I had to go here as my mother desperately needed some new watercolour paints. I cant imagine ever being in a similar situation but hey I was willing to tag along. I can see thi place must be a godsend to students and artists. I loved looking at all the fiddly bits and piece’s explaining to me what each paint and each piece of equipment is used for. I especially liked the art they had in the gallery even though I know little about the art world. Mum says the prices here are pretty reasonable and it makes it even better that its a family run business. Well done Blyth !
