The first thing you need to know about Hanaan(goodness me, I feel like I’m announcing the rules to Fight Club or something) is that the service can be hit and miss. Don’t judge the restaurant on it though, because food-wise it’s one of the nicest in Rusholme. The menu is very accommodating towards spice-phobics; they’re welcome to make specific requests and hence I believe this makes it rather family friendly. Customisation of the menu is key here and that goes for lobbing your favourite meat into your favourite sauce, you simply choose. I’m a happy bunny because they’ll make things up with fish. The prices are stunningly cheap for what you’re getting. The central location can be a blessing or a curse — it gets plenty of custom, sure, but when enveloped by restaurants of a similar nature it can sometimes get overlooked. So make sure this doesn’t happen and give Hanaan a try if you’re looking for a cheap, tasty eat.

Hanaans is one of the brigade on the Curry Mile that employ staff members to stand on the street and hustle you into the restaurant. I have never managed to walk past this place without being a little bit pestered by one of the enthusiastic waiters. Still, if you can bear to put up with their spiel, Hanaans is one of the better restaurants along the famous stretch of Rusholme. For one thing, if you are a student, they offer 2−4−1 on all main courses, which considerably lessens the price of eating here. The food is of a good quality — not particularly great, but by no means bad — and when you are paying half price, who are you to overly complain? The menu has a wide range of dishes, both traditional and unconventional, and everything is prepared freshly in the restaurant’s kitchens, which is always a comfort in the age of microwave meals. Agreed, the food is much better than a microwave meal, and you can taste that in the quality of the cooking. Sadly, the Naan breads were a bit of a let down, as the dough had been allowed to rise too much, and the result was Naans that therefore were a bit too bready. Still, when a meal is costing you about £4 with a drink, it is a small quibble. If you are looking for good food, at an exceptional price, then stop here and get some munch!

Hanaan has been one of my faves(for when I fancy a rare change from Shahenshah) since first year of Uni, when I made a mess of a neww white dress here, by spilling curry all over it. Duh! But my incapability to maneuver a fork from plate to gob without making a mess has nothing to do with Hanaan. The boyf an I ate here last week, actually, and it was even better than I remembered! The décor is a little on the garish side; they’ve gone for a blue, red and yellow theme and boy, have they run with it! It’s a primary-colour-dream! And they have a mahoosive fish tank, which had a little girl pretty much captivated for a full hour while we ate. Which is a nice touch, ensuring that kids don’t run riot by hypnotising them with fish… The staff here used to be a lot more attentive, but we found them a little less helpful than we’d like, having to ask twice for a jug of water before it was brought, and waiting a looooong time for a waiter to even come close enough to our table so we could order more drinks. I couldn’t help but compare it to the excellent, butler-like service you get in Shahenshah. In terms of food, Hanaan has a really fantastic menu. It’s one of the most varied and wide menus on the Curry Mile, and I’m gonna disagree with the cheap’n’cheerful accusations. Though, yes, it is technically cheap in price, the ingredients are all good quality. The seek kebab(big fave of mine) is fresh, almost-charred lamb delicately spiced and served with fresh mint. Truly lush. The boyf and I shared one serving(2 kebabs) and it was enough, because the curry portions are really generous. I plumped for the lamb tikka sizzler; a hot hot hot plate of lamb and vegetables served with an eye-wateringly fresh tikka sauce. The meat was tender and very well marinated. The boyf went for a lamb sambar, which I have never heard of, in all my curry-eating days, but which was really lush(since I started Unilocaling, the boyf has been referring to everything in terms of star-rating. He pronounced the sambar a 4-starrer.) A few low points; the pilau rice was slightly dry and the peshwari naan was flavoured with fruit, rather than containing fruit. But these are very small peeves, and hardly touched the overall loveliness of the meal. One thing that beef-fans might want to heed, is that being a Hindu restaurant, Hanaan serves no beef. But when the lamb is as good as it is here, your red meat needs are covered. Hurrah for Hanaan, one of the nicest curry houses on the Mile.

It can be quite difficult to pick a particular curry house when trawling through the wealth on offer on the curry mile, but spare a thought for Hanaan during your choice. I’ll throw my hat into the ring and agree with the other voices on show here; it is cheap and cheerful, and all the better for it. Whilst I wouldn’t say it is one of the best around, it certainly competes for the title of ‘best value’. Like Alfie pointed out as well, the staff don’t try and grab you off the street which makes a nice change. So if you’re spinning wildly in confused circles trying to make a decision, remember Hanaan!

Agreed. Hanaan is definitely worth a visit. One of the better places on curry mile, both price wise and food wise. The vindaloo is one of the least spicy I’ve had, and its made up for by being the most flavoursome. A really tasty curry I’d recommend to anyone. Even if extreme chilli isn’t really your thing its pretty manageable and a lovely dish. Also great is the Samber. Also, fish curries are my favourite and it’s the only place I know that will do a fish version of whatever curry you fancy. The Kofta(meatball) curries are excellent too. Staff are great and its one of the few places where they don’t pester you to come in off the street. Its got a full bar with some nice cold beers to accompany the curry and they have often given me a free apéritif which never goes amiss after a good hearty curry. Another thing I’d say is that if you’re like me and always think it would be nice to have a starter because they look so good, but always decide not to because a curry is big enough on its own or for financial reasons, then this is the place to try one. They do excellent grilled kebabs in a variety of flavours and some great samosas. Its not the best curry in Manchester, but its definitely one of the best on the curry mile.

Being a bit of a softie, I like the sentiment behind the meaning of this restaurant’s name: it is an expression of longing, a desire to be near to a loved one or a special place so my waiter told me. When I think about the last meal I had a Hanaan, and how hungry I am right now, I certainly share that sentiment. The food here was delicious. Most of the dishes are Indian classics from Passandras, Baltis, Bhunas to Pakistani Karahis, and Biryanis from Bangladesh. Most of the sauces are priced around £4, then you add your choice of meat, vegetable or fish for between 50p-£1.40. I love this system, as you can experiment with dishes that would usually be limited to, say, Lamb or Prawns. The service was a little on the slow side, but the atmosphere is great. I’d definitely come back.

I have pretty much nothing but good things to say about Hanaan Restaurant in Rusholme. The prices can be dirt cheap for what you are getting and so it represents one of the best value for money establishments along this row, even competing with the take out places. I had a Chicken Tikka here and whilst the curry was so-so, the pilau rice was lovely and the naan, oh the naan. It was the thickest, fluffiest most delicious I think I have ever tasted. The restaurant itself is lovely and the waiters very good and attentive. Full marks all round for Hanaan. Just a shame that it is surrounded by many other similar restaurants; if it were out on its own I’m sure people would flock to it more.

My first experience of Manchester’s Curry Mile(travelled from North Wales for the night) — I have to say I will definately go back to this one. Food was beautiful, service was good and the staff were very friendly. We go 20% discount also, but only on the food. Recommended
