One of the nicest newsagents in Rusholme! It’s ever so friendly staff always lets you off if you’ve forgotten some change or in case you’re in a hurry and have no cash. Free extra milk. Yes, I’ve luckily been a reciever of all of that and have always thanked my lucky stars! Jilanis has a great collection of magazines, I obviously prefer the not-so-naughty ones. They also do the Financial Times for .80p a copy which is cheap and a necessity for a business student like me. Everything else is standard newsagent stuff and well, Jilanis keeps you happy!

Every so often someone builds something which sets a blueprint that every other business should follow. Jilani’s Newsagents is exactly that, a golden mould from which all other convenience stores should be shaped. My greatest regret about moving away from Rusholme is that I no longer have ease of access to this heavenly place. As you may or may not be aware, I tend to rate my convenience stores highly if they can deliver unto me one simple thing: sugar. In what form I care not a jot, as long as it sends me into a hyper-glycaemic furore I am satisfied. Jilanis has one of the best sweet counters of any newsagents I have ever been in. Ever! The entire shelf unit in the middle of this rather small shop is dominated by candy. On the left you have the pick ‘n’ mix, the Wham bars, gob-stoppers, bubblegum and liquorice sticks. On the right you have the brand name chocolate bars. At the far end there are the Fudges, the Chomps and the Millions. Next to the counter are the three for a pound bags of sweets. I nearly have a fit every time I enter. I suppose if you’re being cruel it doesn’t exactly offer a lot in the way of grocery-type goods, but I don’t need healthy stuff when I have all this confectionery! Why by Pot Noodles and their ilk when you could have a delicious meal of Daim bars?
