As others have said, service is very slow, to the point of annoyance. The food was okay but not particularly tasty– had to request soy sauce to help here. There were 5 of us and the starters came out at noticeably different times– one soup was wrong and had to go back. Main courses nice but nothing special. Weird disco lights going on upstairs.

The New Emperor… what can I say, poor service and wouldn’t rate the food. Came in here on Chinese New Year weekend with a travel blogger mate of mine who had been here before, he said it’s usually better on normal days. It was busy– there are two floors and we were seated on the top floor. When we arrived there were two other people waiting so we were all led upstairs– the waiter seated the first couple but then just completely forgot about us so we just found a table and sat down. The service was shoddy and the guy couldn’t raise a smile. We were trying to choose drinks and the waiter took the menu away, then we had to ask for it back. He took our food order, then another member of staff came to take our food order again. Asked for the sake from the menu, they didn’t have it. Went for a jack and coke instead. Ordered the started platter to share– it came with ribs, prawn toast, chicken satay, fried chicken drumsticks and a steak roll with some crispy seaweed in the middle. It looked really unappetising in colour and the sauce had collected a film, so it looked like it had been sitting out. It was alright and edible but nothing special. Also ordered a quarter crispy duck which was fine, although the cucumber and spring onion was all dried up. The restaurant itself was also really cold– by the time I left I felt chilled to the bone on a winter’s day! All in all not brilliant and wouldn’t go back to this one.

Had lunch here in August. Delicious hot and sour soup. Service a bit surly but food was perfect and many locals around. Enjoyed very much over some more pricey competitors.

Very slow service bordering on rude. The food is not that great and if you order a beef dish you WILL wonder what it is on your plate. The fact that they automatically charge for service is a bit of an insult as the service really is appaling.

When you are in this part of the town there is not a whole lot of options, but glad to see the New Emperor here as it proved to be a good option. Mind you, it’s not the best place, but it is certainly far from bad and for the local choices it’s probably near the top pick. The service was a bit slow, and you had to ask for things, such as chop sticks or another beer.(note… the beers are not that cold here.) The two appetizers we got were really good and I really enjoyed the hot and sour soup. The menu has all the traditional items one would expect on a Chinese menu, and I for one like Pork in brown garlic sauce. They had it on the menu, but it was not indicated as being spicy. So, I did ask for it to be spiced up and toss in some green onions, extra garlic and some peppers. When the plate came it came as I asked and the taste exceeded my expectations. Overall, I was really happy about the meal and if I’m in this part of town again, I would not hesitate in having dinner here again.

This time it’s not the clothes that are new, it’s the emperor himself! Well isn’t that something. Okay, first things first. The trick here, like with many of these restaurants, is to make a Chinese friend, or at least someone fluent in the language(bonus for you if you already know someone who fits this bill — and luckily I did!) and take them. Oh yes, it’s the classic separate menu phenomenon, people. What you’ll find on New Emperor’s Chinese menu is a plethora of authentic, fresh and spicy dishes to tingle the tastebuds and satisfy that craving. What you’ll find on the English one is glutinous sludge. Well, perhaps I’m being a little harsh here. It’s just that I so preferred the dishes on the Chinese menu, they’re almost worth learning one of the hardest languages in the world for. And sometimes you get free egg tarts, which are just AMAZING. Plus the Chinese menu has a set dinner which is great value — the English one does not. Whether you get a special offer or not the prices are still ridiculously reasonable and great if you’re budgeting. Quality wise it’s easily on par with the likes of Yang Sing and Pacific, and the sheer volume of Chinese customers you find in here is very comforting. Definitely more for social gatherings than dates, and make sure you pop in for dim sum at some point as its reputation precedes it.

The New Emperor is one of the really popular Chinese restaurants in the centre of town — at peak times it can get really busy. But this is a good sign, you know. It is gorgeous inside this pretty large eatery and has really great staff I must say. Prices are average — slightly above average, from my experience. There is bags of choice(maybe too much choice?) so fans of all sorts of Chinese cuisine should, in theory, walk away happy. But. To be honest I have had better food elsewhere — god I’m so controversial. Also I’ve heard rumours that you’ll manage to get the really good stuff if you take someone who speaks Cantonese with you to order. Maybe those who say the New Emperor does amazing food simply know exactly what they’re having. Perhaps as an experiment I’ll try taking an Oriental friend and report back on the difference…

We’ve been regulars here for about 10 years now, and it’s awesome. Come here probably once a month. Service is always good, they’re always keen to turn the table, but they know us now and let us take our time. Beers are good, Wine is ok. Service is always good, and he food is awesme. It has changed since the first time we went there, but it’s still REALLY good. We like our regulars(pai good, har kaw, shu mai) on the apps side and mix up our entrees. Most recently I can recommend the beef with green pepper and onions in black bean sauce, and the szechuan chicken. Definitely go here. Not cheap, but worth it.

This place is not very good. I think maybe the chef needs his taste buds looked at. we went for dinner one evening and all the dishes were all bland and we had to keep asking for the soy sauce. Then another time we went for dim sum in a group of 12 and there was 2 of us fighting to pay the bill of £90 I gave the waiter my 9 £10 notes and my friend gave him 5 £20 notes. He took the £20notes and put my wad of £10 notes back onto the table. I took it back but after we recieved the change from my friends £20 notes I counted my £10 notes and discovered there was 1 £10 note missing I thin the waiter nicked it in the chaos we looked all around the table and under and could not find it!
