I’m not your typical Selfridges shopper, I hate spending money to the point I’d even ask charities for change in event of a rare donation(If I paid with a high end note anyway!), so finding me in a high-end department store is like seeing one of these famous pop stars(I don’t care for pop culture) eating at KFC. This Selfridges store is located partly inside the Manchester Arndale, in Exchange Square opposite Marks and Spencer with entrances from both the Arndale and Market Street, as they are both large stores with multiple floors. I came here looking to pick up some perfume for a friend, and found the store to be a bit like a maze for me(I still don’t understand why people don’t go around perfume /aftershave shops and live off samples!) and I found the layout hard to find a certain brand, and a certain floor where something is sold, so I did have to consult a security guard, who simply gave me the impression that I was Oliver Twist asking for more gruel. If I can remember, this was all in the lower ground floor or basement, but still even knowing which floor to go on(which can be tricky) still is only one small step in the maze that is Selfridges and co Selfridges also has a complicated layout, with tills everywhere and is mainly made up of pop-up stalls for brands, so it is a little confusing and can get really busy too, and I don’t understand all the hype about it to make it so high end. I bought a bottle of perfume for my friend for £42, and that was just a 30ml bottle, which I found to be over-priced, even though I understand it is a designer make. This is a huge store, hence can come off like a maze, and simply is quite expensive, the layout is confusing and not somewhere I would personally choose to shop, so I feel I can only give 2 stars

It was a Saturday afternoon and we were looking for a treat as I’d not met my mate in years so we’d gone to Harvey nics to have afternoon cake but it was an hour wait, didn’t want to wait plus the cake menu didn’t look very appetising so off we went next door to try Selfridges. We had to ask where the café was and when we got there, was slightly disappointed by how small it was but the cakes looked great, with a nice range. I found out later they were from Patisserie Valerie. There was a couple in front of us who were seated then we were next! The waitress asked us how many people, 2 and we didn’t have to wait long, approximately 5 minutes to be seated, which was great considering how busy it looked. We got our menu straight away and looked around to get some ideas. We asked a waitress what the 3 tier things were, afternoon tea. Was a bit much as we’d already had lunch so opted for lemon meringue and raspberry tart, my favourite. Tea was brought promptly and tarts came a few minutes after. We had half each and they were yummy. The service was friendly and attentive. Atmosphere was busy but the tables felt too close together. It was cheaper than I expected too! Just over £11 for 3 teas, 1 coffee and 2 tarts.
