When I used to be in my first year at uni, I used to live right next to Piccadilly train station. For my weekly shopping, I chose this little Tesco. Not a fan, but I can’t complain too much either. You can find few essentials that you need as a student. Bits and bobs as food, few toiletries as well. It was quite expensive, I thought. But the most annoying thing, is that one night the staff refused to serve a 27 year old man with a bottle of beer, because he didn’t have id. After five minutes, another girl, with id asked for the same beer and they refused to give it to her just because they believed she is buying the alcohol for the previous customer. They were very angry and agitated. The girl, I must say, was very very confused and of course, upset cuz she could not purchase her desired item. If you live in the surroundings though, it is an alright shop that you can get, because the rest of them, are either really expensive, like the one from the station, or very tiny and you can’t buy all you need.

Just say no. Whatever it is you were planning to get from Tesco — vegetables, salad, milk, bread, lamb chops — can probably be brought from the independent stall holders within the Arndale Market’s food hall a few minutes away. Failing that, there’s Co-Op’s now dotted all over the city offering everything from groceries and cupboard staples to ready meals. The prices are the same or cheaper than Tesco and you can buy with a clear conscience since the Co-Op is an ethical company selling fair trade products and produce bought directly from farmers.
