While I don’t like the idea of an eagle being spread in whatever way is implied — sandwich paste, sexual innuendo — I do however like a cheap drink, in the right circumstances. A Joseph Holt pub guarantees a cheap drink, heck, it pretty much comes as a written contract. So the six million dollar question is, is it the right circumstances? Weeeell… kinda. This pub-cum-guest house(which doesn’t offer breakfast with bed, mind) is definitely more Stretford than Chorlton and doesn’t harbour any suburban pretentions. One thing everyone seems to agree on is that the average age of punters is around 70, but the staff are as friendly as you could wish for and it does have an outdoor patio for the lovely Chorlton sunshine. A cheap beer isn’t necessarily a good beer but with their house lager at around £1.60 a pint it’s definitely a place to keep your wallet feeling weighty in your pocket. It’s very traditional, and it’s very quiet. One to bear in mind if you’re after something a bit different or are becoming disillusioned with the trendier bars.

the spread eagle like it or hate it it is what it is a proper local manc boozer for local folk the faux-chorltonites who are intimidated by it are fop haired cardigan wearing softies and have spent too long poncing about in dulcimer and such grand bars but you have to drink in normal locals to even it out in my humble manc opinion. yes the punters are often colourful and drunk and expresive but thats manchester ive been drinking in here for 20 years on and off and my mrs used to work on the bar. prices are great and holts beer is amazing and the real thing brewed just up the road. come in and nod to a few locals and youll be chatting till closing time.(god help you)

The Spread Eagle is a Holts house on the western edge of Chorlton Village on Wilbraham Road. They do serve standard Holts ales and lagers at decent prices. However, this is not my favourite pub by any stretch of the imagination, mainly because of the awful atmosphere, ranging from being bothered by drunks when its quiet to the major potential for fights breaking out when it’s busy(at the weekends and for football). A friend of mine came here a few months ago and saw three fights break out in the time it took him to drink one pint, including a guy who knocked out his own brother. Not a place I frequent often, for obvious reasons

The Spread Eagle in Chorlton is a pub with a pun for a name. Get it? Oh yes, how we all laughed; it was the summer of 2002 and temperatures were relatively normal someone suggested we sit outside. We did. It wasn’t quite hot enough for those in t-shirts, but perfectly acceptable for those in jumpers or other equivalent clothing. Anyway, this is a sound pub. Big and with a decent amount of hustle and bustle. Top pint of Guinness also.
