Rather than some streetwise sixth member of The Spice Girls, Urban Spice is a resolutely average takeaway on Hathersage Road. They offer all the usual options — burgers, fried chicken, kebabs and pizzas but whether due to a lack of real competition or just some sort of general apathy don’t bother to do any of these very well. The kebabs are fine but lacking in kick and texturally a bit leathery and the pizzas end up so thick with toppings that the vegetarian special ended up looking a bit like a quiche(which, when I finished the final couple of slices the morning after, is almost exactly what it tasted like. This place should, by rights, be very busy — Victoria Hall is around the corner and there are plenty of students living on Hathersage Road — but despite some pretty decent lunchtime offers Urban Spice always seems empty. Take that as a sign and get some Chinese or Fish and Chips from West Lake next door or make the walk up to curry mile for a kebab.

When I moved into Victoria Point, the flats deep in Hathersage Road, all my friends referred to it as the place in another city, considering its location was very much away from uni, shops, city centre, basically the whole of my world! I missed the kebab eateries of Rusholme and the easy access I once possessed! Then, on a very lucky stroll along the road, I tried out– ‘Urban Spice’ with much reluctance and wow, was I surprised! It was amazing! It wasn’t the very spicy kebab/Indian/Persian flavours, but it was flavour enough to keep you going on! It had the vast variety from kebabs to pizzas to curries and also very moderately priced! It was perfect since it is the only take-away in the near 3 miles and perfect when you’re lazy to cook(rather have nothing keeping your kitchen company!) and fancy a good filling meal! I’d say thumbs up to this place and it works as a real saviour when you’re far from civilization and hustle bustle of the main street!
