I have used this place several times and never been disappointed. The food is good, the fairly local Exmoor ales are extremely good. On my latest visit I had such a huge piece of venison pie(cooked in a rich red wine gravy with juniper berries), I was struggling to finish it, but I did manage and probably will next time when I go back for a repeat performance! The inn itself has few frills and long benches at old, well-scrubbed tables in much of the main bar. So is pleasantly unspoilt as a result. Prices are very average and, for the quality of the food, perfectly acceptable. There is accommodation here which I did sample once. somthing like thirty years ago. Then it was as near perfect as I could have expected I hope it has remained so. There are two negatives to my mind there is very much a hunting vibe throughout the bar, which is against my sensibilities(I am not strictly anti-hunting but do object to the needless cruelty and ritualistic aspects) but it is Exmoor, so c’est la vie, I suppose. Also, the carpark is very small, unless I have missed another part of it. The only bit I could find was beside the Exe-side beer garden, which is very pleasant given the right weather.
