As a new Unilocal user it is mandatory for me to say that this is one of the best pubs in the world(not biased as a local or anything!)

Liz and Darren have really injected some of their soul into this place with great food and great ales. The timber framed classic Nantwich black and white building proivdes a lovely setting. Young Adam behind the bar really knows his ales(6 on at any one time, 3 Weetwoods and other local guests) and samples come readily: o) Nice open fire in front bar, some clientelle can be a bit wooden at times and the place sometimes does not quite have the atmosphere it used to have when it was a rough and ready kind of place. We like the front table for people watching across the road at the Cat and Nakatcha, so stay off it! Bought Dick Strawbridge a pint at the bar the other day and met the guy who runs this website, lovely folks! Fave beer here is Weetwood Cheshire Cat.

Alas, I discovered this place after the dogs were long gone, but it’s still a bloody lovely pub. Walking in from a snowstorm outside to a blazing log fire is always a good thing, glancing to your right and eyeing the lineup of 6 ales adds to the magic. It’s all set in a very tastefully restored half timber affair, with the grandfather clock out back still on time since who knows when. I had the fish stew based on a recommendation from James and Simon, a couple of regular patrons who can be found propping up the bar and in a few of South Cheshire’s other CAMRA-approved establishments, and indeed, it was delicious. So full marks to The Black Lion — I shall be back soon!

The Black Lion used to be my Local Pub, its now changed hands & Gill & her Greyhounds have now sadly left. Unfortunately to all dog lovers, dogs are NO longer allowed anymore which I have to say is a real shame as they used to add to the character of this place & one thing that really made this pub stand stand out has now gone! However, The pub is now very clean & traditional as it always was, however its lost some of its character, in that the staff were incredibly friendly & they used to have great live music ever week which is now severely missed. One thing that greets you when you first walk in especially in the Winter when its real cold outside is the great big REAL Fire! Its the little things that make a big difference, however I still love this pub & its still one of my favorites as it still serves great REAL Ale. They also serve food which looks good although I have not tried. The New Staff seem friendly, perhaps I liked the old place too much after drinking in here with Gill for over 10 years. Anyway, still a great little pub, & well recommended.

What a gem. This is a real pub, with a real fire and real ale! Its a genuine half timbered building with uneven walls and floors even when sober. It does not serve food and the bonus of this is that dogs are welcome. A large greyhound greets customers at the door and then sits on his favourite bench in the window. As you become accustomed to this you realise that most of the pictures are of dogs in general and greyhounds in particular. the landlady has 24 racing greyhounds outside. Next you notice other greyhounds with their owners and conversations easily start up. On the night we visited there were 4 as well as a Schnauzer, who felt outnumbered I’m sure. There are candles on the tables and newspapers, but most of all a warm welcoming atmosphere. You do have to Love dogs, but if you do its great. We will be taking our lurchers with us next time. In addition there is live acoustic music Brilliant.
