Oak Newcastle has an identity crisis. It doesn’t know if it’s a disco or a restaurant. Despite the evidence of tables set out with napkins in wine glasses the music for the greater part of the time we spent here last night was at a level of volume & bpm more consistent with a club. Both the volume and the style changed to something more conducive to eat to after around an hour but they could do with getting it right sooner. As it’s NE1 week just now we were there taking advantage of that deal so the menu we chose from consisted of dishes not, in the main, normally on the place’s core list although we were able to look that over and it seems to contain a few interesting choices. Our toad in the hole and roast beef though were well cooked, particularly the beef. The service was good throughout the evening and both the Merlot and glass of house red(included in the deal but we had to ask for it) went down easily. Overall a could do better but the potential is clearly there.
