Really, really beautiful theatre. Staff were helpful and pleasant throughout.
Prior to the show starting I jokingly said to my boyfriend that he better not rustle any sweetie wrappers as the theatre audience have certain expectations in relation to etiquette. We were quite amused to find out that my comment was pretty accurate.
Luckily the repeated glares and tuts were reserved from some younger audience members in the next row who had brought enough sweets to open a tuck shop. At one point someone else in a rather polite loud voice asked someone in their row to put their sweets away as they were creating too much noisy. I don’t think that it occurred to them that their not so discrete request drowned out more of what was being said than the sweetie rustling had in the first place!
Anyway the play itself (Twelve Angry Men) was really good and worth while seeing.
Lastly it would be great to see the theatre being a bit more creative in allocating stand-​by seats as productions such as this are not just for a typical Theatre Royal audience. Some people who can’t afford the stand-​by price never mind the full price are priced out of the experience which doesn’t need to be the case especially when the theatre isn’t booked to full capacity.

What an amazing building.
It’s just like stepping back in time. Luxurious, lavish, grand, welcoming and comfortable.
Booked some tickets to see a play (as an aside was a little dull) and sat in the grand circle. Good view, comfy seats with just about enough leg room to keep the circulation going.
As with most establishments these days the additional bits they sell we’re a little costly. A round of drinks before the show ensured that it was going to be just the one round. A small tube of ice cream at the interval was to be blunt just too expensive. Surely selling more at a lower price would make better financial sense.
Getting to and from the theatre was nice easy; within walking distance of the city centre hotels, a free metro ride if you have your tickets to the station not more than 50 metres away any car parking just about everywhere.
Looking to book something else for the summer and do dinner before at the wealth of excellent restaurants in this amazing city.

I went to the theater royal last Friday. The building architecturally looks good and is a nice buliding. We went to see Aladdin pantomime which was good, we were on the 4^th floor row the highest in the building, so we had a uninterrupted view of the pantomime. We sat down the the show started, we got our cameras out and took pictures, next thing we know there was these two oldish women (Autotrorium staff presumably) Poking our shoulders quite hard telling us to put our cameras away. I thought it was very rude. I was not impressed also there was no signs telling us no photos allowed, It really spoiled the Pantomine which was very good. I feel like making a formal complaint about this but i will probably get nowhere.
There is a small shop stall selling merchandise, which was expensive. The seating was fairly hard the only good point it was not hot inside.
I am not putting anyone off here but what happened to us is hopefully a one off. However I should not return any time soon.

Visited the Theatre Royal for my birthday, we went to see the Woman in Black. This striking building looks stunning from the outside, and just as traditional as I imagined it would be on the inside.
I would very much recommend getting seats as close to the front as possible, or any other position than at the back! I could not hear or see much of the production, and felt quite sad for it! Next time I’d book a seat closer to the front.
The atmosphere of the Theatre Royal is buzzing and my family, who were in better seats, really enjoyed the production!
Dining options around the theatre are good too with it being in the heart of Newcastle.

I love live theatre but this place is cramped and uncomfortable. I was more comfortable on the metro ride home.

A great theatre that gets lots of big names and reasonable runs. Sits in the middle of probably the highest density of restaurants in the Newcastle.

the Theatre Royal is a great place full of magic, tales and history. it is fabulous inside and out. all the plays are well rehearsed and are a pleasure to watch. i recommend this place highly

A beautiful building both outside and in. Top quality performances. The prices of tickets which can be a bit steep. However they are always worth it.

I thought the tickets were a bit pricey but In the end it was worth it. When you walk in, its such a beautiful place with long staircases. They have a bar which you can sit in for a bit, the drinks are really pricey though. The seating area is very crammed but you can see the stage okay. You have to pay extra for the bigger more comfortable seats which are nearer to the stage. These are probably best for people with wheelchairs are the other seats are not roomy enough. The staff there seemed friendly enough when we spoke to them. The lightning is really remarkable in the shows.

I’ve lost count of how many performances I’ve seen here. I always love to go to this theatre as it’s such a treat in itself. It’s so grand and ornate. Its offers the public such a wide variety that I’m sure everyone in Newcastle must of visited at one time or another. Every year they hold a spectacular pantomime which is worth every penny. You can make a proper evening of it as there is a place to eat or if it’s just a drink your’e after there’s the bar. Also you can get sweets ect at the kiosk. A lovely experience no matter what you see. Situated on Grey Street. Newcastle you realy can’t miss it.

Newcastle Theatre Royal is a stunning building on Grey Street constructed from stone in a classical style. The entrance is ornate and imposing. The theatre inside is a traditional proscenium arch, with stalls and 3 tiers of galleries (don’t sit in The Gods if you’re short sighted or afraid of heights!). The highlight of the theatre’s annual schedule for me is the RSC season which runs from September to early November every year. This has a healthy budget and creates some truly stunning effects and stage decoration. There is a restaurant and half time bar, as well as a kiosk for sweets.

I absolutely love this theatre. The building itself is fantastic and grand looking. It has recently been refurbished inside so now has it’s own restaurant which is lovely to have a meal at before the show (although it isn’t particularly cheap). The theatre plays host to a variety of different shows from opera to ballet, musicals to pantomimes, there is something for everyone throughout the year. Ticket prices seem generally to be determined by the popularity of the show and are priced according to the area you are seated in. Best seats seem to be in the stalls or the grand circle although the views from the upper cirlcle and even in the gods have always been decent. The theatre is set right in the heart of the city and is very close to restaurants, bars and public transport links.

I love attending performances at Theatre Royal in Newcastle for the very reason the whole experience takes you back in time. The place reminds me of the theatres built to house the Melodramas back in the 1700−1800s. I have been seated in almost all sections and I can assure that from everywhere I have been seated i’ve had an excellent view and been able to hear perfectly well (this includes plays, musicals and stand up). The toilets are always in excellent condition, very clean. My only grumble is they never enough staff on during the intermission which means sometimes you just make it back to your seat after getting snacks. Apart from that its always my first choice to see performances.

I’ve seen several performances at Theatre Royal and the space is truly astounding. Hundreds of seats clustered around a central performance area, the Theatre Royal has a very traditional feel to it that has been lost in many other theatres. There are lots of little nooks, crannies, side-​alleys and paths within it that lead all throughout the theatre, so be careful not to lose yourself if trying to rush out for a quick drink. Additionally, there is often a good amount of cheap gallery seats available for all but the most popular of performances, so don’t assume that the premium price tickets should exclude you from the cultural experience that is the Theatre Royal.

This is a great theatre — it is best to get there a little early and have a meal at Caffè Teatro — the baked goats cheese on tomatoes is wonderful — book for the meal if you can to make sure your not late for the production

Upper circle not terrible but I wouldnt bother with the gallery
I have never been in the boxes but I have never seen anyone in them either
They have lots of concesstions — disable people get a free ticket for there able bodied helper if they can not come alone
If you go a lot you can become a friend its £32 a year or £50 for two but you get brochure 20% of tickets and the resteraunt priorty booking free entry into the theatre tours and special friends events
Check in your coat at the little room next to the snack place as you will be mor comfterable and pre order your drink at the bar so you can go and get it straight away in the interval or you will be in the queue ages
Tickets are half price on the day of th performance from 9am if you have a concesion so call up or pop in and see if they have anything left
You can buy different packages with tickets flowers chocolate champagne and meals to make it a really special night out

It is currently on in october and they are doing the merchant of venice and taming of the shrew
If you are going by metro you also travel free for 2 hours before and after the production so time to have a drink afterwards
The ticket inspector just looked at my ticket and told me to have a nice time last time so I think they are used to them now

Newcastle’s Theatre Royal is a stunning Grade I listed building and one of the most historic cultural landmarks in the country. The theatre opened in February 1837 and continues to dominate the heart of Newcastle’s Grainger Town. In its 170 year history the Theatre Royal has played host to some of the biggest names in music, dance, drama and comedy, presenting over 380 performances to over 300,000 people each year.
The theatre is the regional home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, The Rambert Dance Company and Opera North. Performances include drama from leading playwrights, renowned West End musicals, contemporary dance from internationally acclaimed choreographers and of course pantomime, attracting over 70,000 people.
The Theatre Royal has bars on all levels and the Caffè Teatro is open from 9am (access from Market Street).
The theatre has eight wheelchair spaces available in the Stalls (one free ticket is available for the assistant of a disabled person not able to attend events unaccompanied). A sound enhancement system is installed in the auditorium. Guide, hearing and other working dogs are welcome in all parts of the theatre, and there are accessible toilets on all levels.
There is ample parking on Shakespeare St. and Hood St. (with spaces for Blue Badge Holders) and all levels of the theatre enjoy lift access.
The auditorium is absolutely beautiful, however the seats are very close together and this can be a problem during long performances. The seats are quite uncomfortable and if anyone needs to leave their seat it is very difficult, given the very limited space, for them to make their way along the aisle.
If you are travelling to Newcastle this building really is a ‘must see’, both outside and inside it is a stunning piece of cultural history.

Beautiful theatre, as lovely inside as out. Shows top dramas. Staff are ultra friendly.

Whether attending a pantomime (in my case I think peter pan with victor spinetti) or shakespeare (rsc productions of macbeth, king lear, a midsummer night’s dream, twelfth night, as you like it) this theatre is absolutely great. The pillars outside give ample shelter when it’s raining and a real sense of civic pride and achievement. the interior beats most London theatres for scale and opulence and the auditorium is fantastic.
We always tended to sit in the circle, I suppose because it was a bit cheaper.
If you think Newcastle is just the Bigg Market, think again! Get some culture in you!

Situated in the heart of the city this building is very impressive both inside and out. Theatre Royal is regional home to well-​renowned companies such as RSC and Opera North as well as accommodating West end musicals and contemporary dance shows. Pre theatre food and drinks are also available. Beware to avoid the higher tiers if you suffer from vertigo as the auditorium is very steep and although the view from the top is fantastic it isn’t for the faint hearted.
If you don’t want to see a performance then this magnificent building is still worth a visit and is open to the public during the day.
