This is a wonderful forest park nestled in the South Armagh countryside and a few miles from Co Louth in the Irish Republic. If it’s hill walking you want, you got it with stunning scenery all around. It opens daily from 8am to dusk. Recreation facilities are provided in the core area of the forest park and include; a new, enchanting Fairy Glen that’s fun for young and not do young. Little tree houses inhabited by fairies, houses that hobbits may reside, places where Giants eat and drink. Elsewhere there’s a fantastic play area again with lots for all ages — I was particularly impressed by the disabled friendly swings accessed for folk in wheelchairs. a duck pond, a car park, a Grounded café(see my review) public toilets and a grass recreation area with picnic tables and bench seats. From the upper area of the main car park there’s a one mile long walking trail is signposted around Hawthorn Hill Forest Nature Reserve. There is also an 8 mile long tarmac surfaced scenic drive, for wonderful views across the south Down countryside towards the Mourne Mountains, the Cooley Peninsula, and Dundalk. As Wallace would say to Gromit, it’s a grand day out.
