Fish and chips close to the coast is a tough industry. So many places in the area to try and the competition for quality is on! This place was brought to my attention because apparently it’s famous and really good. The décor is basic, like most fish shops. The tables have connected bucket seats for 4 or 6 people. The staff are really nice, they come up to your table to take your order. Prompt service. The portions of food are huge, which is a good thing for me. However maybe on this day they missed they mark. 4 of us went and we all got the same vibe from the food… The fish itself was delicious but the batter and the way it was fried completely wrecked it. This was some really greasy fish. It was the type of greasy that lingers in your mouth like a layer. The chips lacked everything. Poorly fried and lifeless chips. It’s a shame cause it’s also expensive compared to others in the area. £7.50 for fish and chips £6.50 with no chips. I think there are so many fish and chip places in the area I don’t need to go back.

Been to several Fish&Chip Shops on my visits over to the U.K. Marshalls is a must every time. It’s in a nice little seaside part of Tynemouth with a street full of independent shops to visit. Marshalls is a gem, right in the middle of it all. It’s simple. Fish, chips and a can of the soda/pop of your choice. By far my favorite fish in all of the shops that I’ve tried. HUGE portion of fish on top of a large pile of chips(fries) simply served in a basket. There’s really not much else to say. Would I go back? I do. Every single visit. It’s is one of, if not THE, most important stops of every visit. So just go. If you find yourself anywhere near the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area, you MUST go.

My wife and I Have visited Marshals fish and chip shop in Tynemouth three times in just under 6 weeks on the first occasion we arrived just as the restaurant part was opening, on our order being brought to the table I had to complain that whilst the fish was hot the chips were stone cold. The food was taken away and its replacement was of a better standard, on the second occasion the fish again was excellent but the chips were only warmish and today the 23/10/2012 we paid our third and probably final visit. As on the past two occasions the fish was hot but my chips were barely warm, whilst my wife’s were hot, I suspect that the fryer of the food does not cook to order and cooks and stores chips in anticipation of receiving a customer, sadly due to this method being used certain customers will receive chips that have been cooked in advance and totally unfit for consumption. Its Time I think that we find another chip shop that cooks to order which ensures a hot meal every time.

We visited Marshalls while in Tynemouth as we have done for several years however in my opinion the service and food quality has deteriorated. We waited for a table as usual but was served much later that many seated after us the waitress was aware. After much anticipation we were served and were very disappointed the fish was so dry it was welded to the hard batter exterior and the fish has a thread like co sistency rather than flakes because of it. We also found the chips to be dry and various shades of colour as if reheated perhaps. We only mentioned the fact we found the fish dry because we were asked when we went to pay as we did not want to cause a fuss. However we received no response whatsover. Thank goodness for the marvellous tea room nearby where we were able to enjoy something more appetising.

As a veggie who is now living in the UK and forced to go from vegan to vegetarian, I asked around for a place where I could get the BEST British-styled Fish and Chips. I was told by many people that it’s out of Newcastle and by the coast in Tynemouth. So today one of my new friends took me out to the coast for this English favourite. We walked there from Newcastle, because I was determined to burn off the calories before I gain them back with the fish and chips. It took us 3 hours. When we arrived at this fish and chips shop, to me it didn’t look very impressive and I would have totally missed it if I was there on my own. The restaurant side did not look very pretty, more or less like a cafeteria, but patrons receive full wait staff service. We opt for the take-out option because I wanted a patio and it was wayy too hot to sit inside and eat. We joined the queue on the take-away side. The line took forever, maybe it was the heat, but we got fresh fish and chips due to the high volume of customers. We took our lunch and sat on a wall opposite the Tynemouth Priory and enjoyed the meal facing the North Sea under the blazing sun. The fish was fresh as were the chips, and the proportions were also generous. I must say it was a very good and a well-deserved reward for making the trek from town. I’m glad I held out from trying this same meal at a local pub and made the trip out for the good stuff. However, at a pub, I would have enjoyed a nice cold beer with it, as I was dying of thirst and desired something super cold from the three hour walk.

Come here often. The chips are always pretty nice, the fish however is rather variable. If its busy the fish is decent but on quieter days its pretty tough from being under the heat lamps too long. 4 stars if youre ordering other than fish.

Have you tried Marshalls in Tynemouth said my mother. Wish i had’nt bothered now. Long queue but you have to expect that with the reputation this chip shop has apparently??. 2 cod 1 chips 1 peas, bottle of water and a sachet of sauce for £10 a little pricey but if its good i dont mind paying a little extra… Sadly it was’nt good at all .The chips were ok but for £1.60 the portion was small, the cod was awful, old, dry, chewey and the actual fillet was that thin it could have passed for plaice, the peas… you could have cut with a saw, dry and no taste. If i hadnt have driven away to the priory and the queue hadnt been so long i would have certainly taken this rubbish back. The wife and i are not normally complainers but this was so bad ive come home and written this in the hope that others dont get RIPPEDOFF. Never again.

Went today for lunch while at tynemouth priory — this place was pretty packed though it was lunch time managed to grab the only spare table left. Its quite small in here with a long line of tables on each side. The waitresses took our order really quickly though the fish did take a long time to come that may have been because they were so busy. The fish its self was a large portion covered in golden batter which my fiancé states was lovely. i can not confirm this but can state that the chips were proper fat tasty chip shop chips and the mushy peas were almost as good as his mams. Its £6.00 for fish and chips, the turks head on the same street does this for £3,25 but dont taste half as nice. Well worth a visit if you are in tynemouth

Quite simply some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had and the staff(though sometimes stressed) are always willing to help. The take away is better than sitting in mind(café area needs sprucing up)

Those wild green and white outfits(complete with topper) worn by the servers at Marshalls would be pretty darned awful if not for the distracting thick and ultra crunchy deliciousness of fried fish fillets that flow over the edges of the oblong ceramic plate. Enjoy the quick seat-in or take out service of this English classic all day every day, but be sure to take a long beach stroll(miles and miles are available from Tynemouth in the Whitley Bay direction and beyond) in between or you’ll be due for vein clot for sure. Plastic stationary bench seats make it difficult to squeeze out after the hefty meal, but enjoying meals with friends and family here makes it all worth while.

Famous in Tynemouth for their fish and chips. Located on the main street in tynemouth you will find it hard to park your car. The parking in the street is always busy, you have to drive round and round until someone leaves. Marshalls has a restaurant where you can sit in and eat. There is also a small door next door, which leads you along a thin corridor to the take away section. The counter is tiny but it does what its meant to. There are normally about 3 or 4 staff on serving all the time and the fryer in the back. Prices are a bit dear. But people go back again and again as the food is lovely. The chips are not greasy. the fish is cooked perfectly. They even cater for the really fussy, so if you want fish with no batter that is what they will cook for you. The only bad part is its success. It opens at 11 on a staurday and there is always a queue outside at least 15 mins before.
