The best way to describe the Charles Bradlaugh(the man himself slightly right of Hitler) is it’s the town center ‘middle-class pub’, the clientele ‘studenty’/young professional/urban trendy, the piped and DJ music tailored to. They have jazz nights on Sunday and Indy nights in the week. It was the ‘in place’ for the cotton wearing classes in the 90s but the smoking ban and high beer prices has deterred the Northampton University crowd from trekking into town to enjoy its safe and laid back ambience. The bouncers have cob webs in their knuckle dusters for the lack of action, the pub comfortably away from the main town centre drag so doesn’t attract the baseball capped polyester ‘wrong uns’. There is never trouble in here. With excellent car parking and town just a five minute walk away it’s a great starter pub for your night out if you want to avoid the working classes. The beer prices are the main drag ones though and there are rarely deals or happy hours, although they will serve a pot of tea or coffee on a Saturday night if you ask nicely. You can also ask for Connect 4 or Battleships to be really noisy on the corner table with your friends although the trend for pub games is dying off fast here. I the summer the beer garden is a cracker and the pub much livlier. The girls are pretty and reasonably intelligent here and the guys look like they are straight from a styled indie band, mop tops and the Badly Drawn Boy the look today. It’s not a great chatting up pub as the music is loud to keep you drinking and the most interaction goes on outside in the smoking area, a clever three walled shed with those carbon dioxide polluting heaters that got around the absurd smoking ban that has now cost 50,000 jobs in the pub trade, most of those, rather ironically, smokers

The Charles Bradlaugh is located a short walk from Northampton town centre and is a large pub set over 2 floors and a garden/smoking area. The ambience in this place is extremely chilled and this is emphasised on Friday and Saturday nights with DJs playing funky yet unobtrusive tunes while the trendy crowd discusses the events of the past week. The drink prices are pretty standard and the food really nice. The bar staff and clientele they serve are all very friendly and it’s the perfect place for a wind down drink or the start to a night out with friends. An extra added bonus is car parking for customers.

I used to LOVE this pub! Popular with students. They always put a little bit extra in to things(ie shamrocks on the head of their guiness) If they still serve it, their Vodka Slushes are fab!(but lethal)

Top quality Gastropub in Northampton Town Centre. Located just alongside the Chronicle And Echo building, The Charles Bradlaugh has it’s own secure carpark, beer garden and disabled access. Named after the famous political activist and MP of Northampton, Mr Charles Bradlaugh, the pub is well known in the area for it’s well stocked drinks and good service. Food is served promptly and covers a wide menu — veggies are well catered for. The Charles Bradlaugh is ideal for large groups. Seating areas can be reserved, including the downstairs ‘pit’ which comfortably seats 30, and the seperate upstairs bar is open from 8 on Fridays and Saturdays. Highly recommended pub. Slightly above average prices for Northampton, but good quality drinks and food and excellent service more than makes up for it.
