Golden Star

There’s a new chef and food menu, and the food here is interesting (rabbit, pigeon, venison), delicious and well-​priced. I ordered the burger (litmus test of food, it’s surprisingly easy to mess up a burger) and it was a monster of a home made beast, well done but still moist in its centre. Chips were skin on and again, making me tremble in their presence. Salad was seasoned well (not just leaves on a plate) and overall I thought it was great. My wife had the vegetarian option (a sunshine tart) and it’s obvious that the Golden Star get vegetarians, it was full of flavour and not just your stock veggie option (mushroom risotto anyone). Beer was well kept and wasn’t the usual suspects (even the Green King option was the new Golden IPA I think) and the staff were lovely. Add to this that they have not one but two cats (old boy pub cat and a new ginger kitten) and I was sold great stuff!

Not too bad. A kind of up market-​ish louts pub with good staff and a decent vibe. I’ve certainly been in worse places. The location is good, the staff are helpful and the prices not too bad. Average is a pretty spot on rating for what is an average pub in a city full of pubs. No surprises, so no worries.
