The biggest music venue in Norwich hosts a variety of big name acts and club nights. Does get crowded for sell out gigs, but has steps down to the pit area so most can get a reasonable view. Being a student venue the bar is cheapalso plenty of car parking and regular buses into the city.

The Main music venue in Norwich, the LCR(Lower Common Room) is situated within the University of East Anglia. It has a capacity of 1550, this can feel very cramped on sell out nights and difficult to get a good view if you are at the back of the hall. The dancefloor is set down a few steps so that people who don’t want to get in the mosh pit can get a good view. Sound system always sounds good. There are also club nights that are easily as good as anything Norwich City Centre has to offer, Pam’s House being one of the best dance nights around. A bit of trivia: The UEALCR was the first venue in the country to ban The Sex Pistiols!!!

Whether you view UEA’s LCR as a good or bad venue is a very subjective experience, but overall it has a few good aspects about it. The consistency of reasonably high quality acts, both musical and comedic, is good. The ticket prices are also very reasonable for the acts concerned, and considering the venue is so small it is an intimate experience. It does however get extremely crowded to an almost uncomfortable extent. The venue is primarily student dominated and the prices reflect as such, but likewise so does the behaviour of some of the customers. The LCR Bar, and its close proximity to the Union Bar, is a good aspect of the venue if you are inclined to seek out cheaply priced alcohol.

The LCR at the University of East Anglia is an excellent venue for students and non-students alike. Many up and coming bands have played the LCR and many of the older bands come back to play time and time again. Acts of the moment often use the LCR as a warm up gig for a bigger tour. Ticket prices are reasonable — usually up to £20 a time, and the venue is intimate — meaning you actually get to see the band you are paying to see without the need for video screens! Being a university, bar prices are student prices, so you can have a decent night out without it breaking the bank. Buses run regularly to and from the city centre to the UEA so there is no problem with getting home afterwards, and for those who are driving in, there is ample car parking available. Tickets can be booked online or over the phone, and the staff are very helpful. If you sign up for their newsletter, they will keep you informed of new gigs coming along.

The UEA is great for a night out. the bands here althought are not always headliners are very good and you can usually find a great out. the room is quite small and so the concert will be very intimate, unlike other conerts when you are straining to see. this is not the case as whether seated or standing you can usually get a good position. during the xmas period they also have a few pantos here, so good for the big kid inside.

Club night that runs at the university campus. Great if you are living in Halls as the walk home is no existent. They do various themes and fancy dress. The movie themed night had free popcorn and prizes from the local cinema as well as inflatable Oscars on stage. As a live music venue it can get quite busy. There’s a large pit area where most people dance and watch the acts. On the outer sides of this people stand on the stairs. There are two bars available to buy drinks from and a merchandise table is usually found at the back. The number 25 bus is a regular scheduled service here from the city centre.

Norwich as a city has many downfalls. Its size, for example, leaves something to be desired. The countryside folk, for example, I’ve met nicer people. But if there’s one redeeming quality about Norwich, it’s the music scene, and the UEALCR is the mother of Norwich’s musical culture. Kate Nash, Lostprophets, The Kooks, Dirty Pretty Things, Funeral For A Friend, Alphabeat, The Ting Tingsthese are just a few of the many fantastic and well-known British bands that have graced the stage of the UEALCR. Often getting the big bands before they’re big, anybody visiting Norwich would do well to go to any of the gigs happening here. Aside the music itself, the LCR has other great qualities. The intimacy of the venue, which often sells out, means that any performer connects with the audience far more than most cities’ big venues. The Union Bar sells well-priced drinks on all gig nights, and merchandise stands are usually inside and out. An awesome music venue for anybody interested in the upcoming music scene, or who wants to see a big band in a incredibly intimate setting!
