Café Tarifa is a terrific addition to Oxford’s Cowley Road: classy, relaxed, friendly, with a soothing yet enriching Mediterranean/North African vibe. A large low-lit space with low seating centred around a bar splashed in light colours, I came here late one evening with friends for a pre-club drink. As, it appeared, had most of its customers. And for that it was perfect. Our table proved an ideal perch to chat, sip our cocktails(mine, a decent Old Fashioned) and people watch. The crowd was a friendly, well-dressed mix of 20 and 30somethings. I can’t think where else I’d have rather been at this time on a Saturday night on Cowley Road.

I really enjoy going to Café Tarifa. I feel like I’ve been transported to a more exotic country, with rugs on the chairs, beanbags on the floors, and a courtyard with palm trees out the back. A good range of cocktails, which are cheaper(£3.50) if you go between 5−7pm. Have never eaten there so can’t comment on the food.
