I feel like I shouldn’t really be reviewing this, because every time I pass it, I scrunch up my nose and think of happier things like the cake shop. However, my friend is a chef and will not stop raving about Haymans. He drives a fair way to come shopping here, so I guess there must be something in that. Smell bias aside, there is an impressive array of fish — mainly fresh, but also frozen and part-prepared, such as smoked and salted. It’s very much like a French market stall and the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. They sometimes have squid and other similarly exotic fish in, and are usually able to let you know when they’ll next get things in if they’re currently not there. The prices are apparently reasonably for what you get, although it always surprises me how expensive fish is. This seems to be top-notch stuff though — the company supplies lots of local restaurants and even some lucky Oxford colleges. If you’re a fish fan, this is the place to come. If, like me, your nose starts whinging at the idea, at least we can admire the idea
