I’ve been there on lunch with my girlfriend and have to say it was very great experience! First person, who sit us down — with perception as men in charge, was very friendly and found a best spot(trust me that’s hardest thing on the world :) because of my girlfriend). Weitress are mainly Czech/Slovakian — extremely helpful and friendly! Food is tasty and in my eyes good value for money. Atmosphere is very British and it was over all such a good experience that I’d definitely come again.

The beer was OK, and the food passable(when it eventually arrived, having had to remind them about 25 mins after ordering). The real problem was the hygiene though: the Gents was out of loo roll and paper towels, the bin overflowing and the floor in need of cleaning. 4 hours after I pointed this out to the staff they hadn’t bothered to do anything about it! Pretty disgusting really.

We had a pub meal for 4, no complaints other than having to wait quite a while but we was in no rush so worked for us.

I dropped in here for a drink and had some pretty good mulled wine and some great conversation with the bartender. Cosy booths, quiet atmosphere and decent pricing; if there weren’t so many places for me to explore while I’m staying in Oxford, I’d consider stopping back in.

As long as you walk in knowing you are not going to get a fancy meal the food is alright. It reminds me of like a Chilis, TGI Fridays, or Applebees in the States but slightly lower quality. On the plus side, the food wasn’t heavily greasy or salty. The nachos were a bit pitiful looking but tasted ok. The chicken in the chicken ceasar was actually seasoned and cooked well. The meat was moist and juicy. They over did it on the cheese for the lasagna. It came out with piles of almost melted cheese on top. Tomato Basil SoupNachosChicken Caesar SaladLasagna

Such a shame that this has now gone to a Beefeater style mess. This once lovely old pub had a special place in my heart, as did The Turl,(backed onto it in Turl Street), and many others in Oxford. The service was appalling, food rubbery and lukewarm. To be fair, on making this observation, we were offered alternatives, but we didn’t want more of the same. Thankyou. Give it a miss 06/07/12Now the Turl Bar is shut, as is The Market Tavernyou’d just as well nip down to The Old Tom!!! I will tomorrow.

Affordable food(the lunch and dinner specials) in decent quality. It is more a restaurant than a pub though and food quaility is decent but not overwhelming as it is part of the chain of Beefeater restaurants. Staff was very friendly when I was there and many families ate there as it is quite good value for the money. I would go there anytime again, did not appear too much like a tourist trap to me. It is standard chain restaurant fare, like a British version of Pizza Hut or Starbucks. Really, really ok and quite good value(if you take the high Oxford prices for dining!). The restaurant itself is nicely furnished and clean.

It is a pub with a chain pub restaurant(Beefeater) inside. Standard pubish fare, slightly sub standard quality. I went here because people in my large group wanted to, it was«fine.» If you are the type of person who likes Chili’s or Applebee’s in the US, you’d probably like the food here. Re: the pub part, it is a pub. shrugs.

I always go to The Mitre Pub at least once when I’m in Oxford. Dinner on the restaurant side is good– not excellent, but a cozy atmosphere with reliably decent food. Lunch in the pub is much, much better. You can get a lovely bowl of soup with some bread or a sandwich, plus a drink for under 10.

The good: — Reliable food — you know what you’re going to get. — Not too crowded — good place to go at weekends or in summer where everywhere else is packed to the point of being uncomfortable. — The food is affordable — lots of meals for under a tenner. — Good location The bad: — The food really isn’t the greatest. — The staff seem rather unenthusiastic. — I was ID-ed when I went in — this hardly ever happens to me in Oxford, and I was asked in quite an accusing manner, as if I had no right to be there(which I did). This place has definitely got potential and it’s useful for group gatherings, as you can usually get a big table together. However, there’s plenty of potential for improvement.

The Mitre is a nice little pub! It is quite dark and old fashioned inside, but that adds to the character. I have never had any difficulties in getting a table here, which is rare for Oxford! It is normally quite quiet. The bar menu has quite a good selection of foods, and some of them are cheaper if you order before 6.30pm! There are several choices for vegetarians, but it is quite limited really. I find the food quite tasty, nothing special really, but pleasant and well presented. The service is quick, the staff just take your orders, not very chatty. Nice for a meal out and chat with a friend.

I don’t understand how it is that no one has reviewed this place yet. I used to come here all the time. I think they were a Beefeater or some such chain but that didn’t diminish it one bit. The inside is a bit of a rabbit warren of various rooms, some cosy, some quite open and all with tables and chairs. The service is quick and efficient and when I was last there, they were happy with groups small or large. They have more than one floor and as such can be hired out for functions and whatnot. Being right in the middle of Oxford though there is nothing in the way of parking there and it is stairs all the way up so be warned. The inside is probably what everyone imagines a British pub to be though and it is just the best place in all Oxford to bring a tourist for lunch

Given the abundance of excellent pubs in Oxford the Lamb and Flag, Eagle and Child, King’s Arms, Three Goat’s Heads, and so on the Mitre has got a lot to live up to, and unfortunately it falls flatter than a crippled hedgehog on the M25. It’s a dark, dingy, bog-standard chain pub with by-the-numbers food, bored staff, and high prices. Given its excellent location(bang on Turl Street and the High Street) you’d expect a nice place, but it seems to make its money from tourists and other people who don’t know any better. Seriously, don’t bother. You have so many excellent pubs to choose from don’t waste your time with this one.

A lovely location on the corner of the High and Turl Street, a big, light space, and a long history, should make this one of Oxford’s best pubs. Instead, it’s a formulaic Beefeater-style joint that seems to rely almost entirely on the tourist trade to get by. The staff look like they’d rather be anywhere else(and seem to pass the time by asking for ID from virtually anyone who ventures in); the beers and spirits are overpriced; and the whole ambience is one of slapdash profiteering off the back of the University links — some old(or faux old) paintings, some university related paraphenalia, and no real cohesion at all in what it’s trying to do. And the food is bog-standard pub grub dressed up as something special(The Mitre styles itself as a restaurant also, and has a dedicated dining area). If they could inject some energy into the place they could turn it into something special, and pick up the sort of business the Kings Arms(which probably has a similar floor space) gets. Instead, it just drifts aimlessly along.

It is a tourist trap but it does serve Boddies smoothflow, and I’m sure hand-drawn too. This makes it well worth the visit as far as I’m concerned, and if you go along on a week night there wont be many tourists around. Its also another classic little place to avoid college crowds(well, apart from location ignorant freshers). You’re so close to 5 massive colleges and yet you wont see a soul.

This is DEFINITELY a tourist trap. It’s a pub right on the high street next to the covered market, so it’s where loads of tourists go. It’s part of the Beefeater chain, so they serve badly prepared chain pub food. I’m pretty sure that my sunday roast was not meant to taste like pre-chewed leather.

Bit of a tourist trap, but i still like it. Big plates of food and reasonably good value for money(for Oxford). This is one of the few pubs in Oxford where it’s reasonably easy to get a seat. It’s a miracle!
