This is the best chip shop I know. On the up side the food is fab, super tasty and more adventurous than the average chippie. On the down side the queues can be horrendous. Overall, sitting on the harbour with a hot box of fish and chips that have been cooked to order in beef dripping, will leave you feeling warm on the inside and smiley faced, whatever the weather! Don’t fill up on Cornish pasties to make sure you have space for the goodies from this great little chippy!

Wow! I was blown away by Rick Stein’s fish and chips, seriously some of the best tasting fried fish that I have ever had. We were lucky to get in as we arrived just before 8 on a Saturday night and were the last people to get served. When we walked by at other times there was a massive queue. All of the food is cooked in beef dripping, I had the cod and chips which came to around £10. The chips could have been better though. I washed with half a pint of Korev(Cornish lager), I wish I could have had more as it was some of the best beer I have tasted, but I was driving! I concede that it is a little overpriced for fish and chips but it is definitely worth checking out if you visit Padstow.

Oh dear, oh dear a mixed review here for Rick Steins fish & chip place. It’s £9.50 for cod n chips with a lemon wedge and its this price for most other fish choices like plaice and haddock. About £2 over the odds. A portion of mushy peas brings it £10.70. Sea bream with chips and a lemon wedge is about £10.50. All of the food is fried in beef dripping which is great(cheap to buy too). Mind you the place was packed with customers, with still more queuing up outside and folk prepared to wait for 30⁄40 minutes to get in, so don’t expect to see a price reduction any time soon. Oh the power of celebrity. We waited less than 10 minutes and were just about to go to a place in the town centre when we were waved in. We set 10 minutes as our maximum wait time. I give it 7 out a 10 for the cod as I’m in a good mood. The cod was pretty good thin batter coating but certainly it was not great. I’d expected great. It was a medium sized portion. I’ve had better and bigger portions in other places and at lower cost too. My cod was not fully battered, exposing a thumb size piece of the fish directly to hot oil so some burned and dried out fish. A basic error that really shouldn’t happen here of all places. I couldn’t be bothered complaining, I was just too tired at that point. The chips get 8⁄10. Overpriced food, certainly yes. At £4.25 for a pint of local Cornish ale this too is also way overpriced. There’s also a selection of wines for sale and at £1.95 for a good 300ml of diet coca cola this is at least a good deal, as more and more food outlets are really ripping us off for this fizzy, sugar water. The home — made aioli with garlic that I ordered as a side(£1.20) is a straight 10⁄10 really, just wonderful to get real fresh Mayo based aioli; they must be unique in making this fresh and good on them. The huge portion of fresh onion rings were just superb and 10⁄10 too at £3.50. The service is also 10⁄10 with mega friendly, constantly busy staff, although it took quite a time for our order to arrive. All food is served up in cardboard boxes. No plates here matey. The location is 2/10, as there’s just no way of fancying this place up as its in a mini industrial estate near the sea and its apparently now open 15 years. There’s also his cookery school and a Rick Stein deli just nearby, though the deli preparation area is in a small industrial estate outside town, near a small and darn good real ale brewery the Padstow Brewing Company. The level of no comfort makes it 0⁄10. We sit cheek by jowl with albeit friendly strangers as we are all crammed together on a long wooden table and wooden bench with salt and pepper, Heinz tomato sauce and Sarson’s vinegar before us. I would return, but I’m not in any hurry to do so.

Delicious! Best fish and chips I’ve ever had! Only complaint would be is that their vinegar is a bit weak. Being from Scotland I like to experience a bit of gut rot from proper strong vinegar!

Visited once out of curiosity. Not impressed with the quality or the price. My family are from Porthcothan Bay and can I say my grandparents would be rolling in their grave if they knew that Padstow had been Rick Steined. We go to Padstow less since it has been given this transformation. I think that it would ahve been better for Rick to commission some local places and employ different chefs rather than ‘Brand’ himself all over the place. My advice, get a fresh pasty, some cornish ice cream clotted cream and take a walk up the hill!

Chips were dreadful and I didn’t apprecitae eating out of a cardboard box at this price! This place has a good name, but I have absolutely no idea why now I have visited it. I can assure you that just about any chippy does better food than this at a greatly reduced price! Rick, you need to check on the Padstow shop, it’s letting your name down badly.

Ok, cheap it ain’t. £8.70 for Hake and chips. Chips good but nothing special. Fish v nice, excellent thin crispy batter. Here’s the thing; if you’re in Padstein, you like fish and chips, then this is your Mecca. Go worship.

After hearing all the great reviews decided to visit Rick Steins fish and chip shop with my wife and son on the 01st August 2011. After queing for nearly an hour and paying through the nose i was hugely dissappointed. The batter was soggy, the fish was dry and overcooked. There was still skin and bone on the fish. The chips were undercooked. Had i known this to be an average chippy for the price i would have ate somewhere else. Avoid at all costs i do not know what all the hype is about for poor quality food that my 3 year old son could have cooked. Go into Padstow there are some lovely fish and chip shops at half the price. Rick i suggest you do a spot inspection i think it is only the name of your chippy keepiing you open for buisness, it is certaily not the food.

A bit on the pricey side for fish and chips, but the chips were amazing crispy and golden on the outside, light and fluffy inside and not greasy at at all. I don’t eat fish but my companion assured me that it was the best fish he’d ever tasted and after initially balking at the cost agreed it was definitely worth it.

We wandered past here at lunchtime on a sunny Monday afternoon in early July and was amazed at how busy it was. We decided to come back a few evenings later at arrived at about 8:15 and were seated promptly(closes at 9pm). It does not feel like a regular fish & chip shop but then again not many have a restaurant inside — when I say restaurant I mean some tables & chairs or benches which you share with whoever else is there at the time(a bit like Wagamama). It’s great that you can choose to have your fish in traditional batter or grilled — we went for the grilled option and were not disappointed by the Lemon Sole or Sea Bream. The chips were a little dry but tasted good. Believe me when I say the portion might look small but we struggled to finish our meals. The fact they come in a box is quirky. It is pricey approx £9 per portion but is worth doing at least once.

These fish and chips are in a league of their own and, no matter where you live or are staying, are well worth the trek. The winter deal, as mentioned in another review, is extremely good value for money. We enjoyed this as a very leisurely lunch at the start of February. Can get extremely busy in the summer. Top tip: try the homemade tartare sauce, and although last time it wasn’t on the menu, ask for the garlic mayo. Mmmm.

This fish and chip shop is situated in the fishing town of padstow only stones throw from the shops and resturants, and near the harbour. Be prepared for the best fish and chips you have ever tasted, and be ready to queue, as this place is full of people all waiting outside before it even opens, the fresh fish and chips are perfect ad can be smelt 300 metres away. But i tell you that is well worth the wait. but you wont believe it till you try it. The prices i feel are as expected you only get what you pay for. It is situated right near the harbour and a short distance from the other resturants and the shops. There is parking is a problem with the lack of spaces so going early may be the best option. Or perhaps go to padstow on a coach trip.

The queues are always out the door but the fish is very tasty. Right on the harbour front, the fish is straight off the boats. Prices are very reasonable but parking is not that easy and finding somewhere to site and eat is a real challenge. Watch out for the seagulls too! They’ll take the fish whole if they see the chance.

Gosh — I really don’t know why some people praise this place so much. As it is Rick Stein’s place you would expect it to be one of the best fish and chips you’ve ever tasted. Not so. After putting in quite an effort to get them in the first place by queueing up for a while(yes the queues are pretty long) and paying a much higher price for a standard size portion, I was hugely disappointed. The fish, though crispy on top, was dripping in grease through to the already greasy soggy chips. There was so much grease that it quickly seeped through the box onto my hands resulting in nice greasy-fishy-chip hands. Not a good precursor for a romantic hand-in-hand stroll along the quay.

My most favourite fish and chip shop in the world! They even serve wine in here, its got to be good! Well you might think that Rick Stein has turned Padstow(or Padstein as the locals call it) into some sort of disneyworld devoted to him, but i think he has opened some wonderful eateries and delis, aswell as his b&b’s and his famous restaurant(too pricy for us though). So we came to the fish and chip shop not expecting it to be that amazing. We were wrong. The fish was too die for, the batter melted in your mouth and the chips were not greasy, just crispy and divine. I loved the charm or this place and the setting in padstow, i will be back to try ricks fish and chips again, just yummy!

Great Fish and Chips but not worth the price. Over £50 for 6 of us !!! Service was efficient but queues are very long. Seemed like a production line rather than genuine home cooked fish and chips. Car Park next door but little or no outside seating.

Fantastic fish and chips, need I say more. Well yes actually, this has to be the fish and chip shop to visit if you are in the area. Beef dripping is the key ingredient here for the battered fish, and it makes it taste brilliant. The variety of the fish available is second to none. If you’re planning a visit be sure to get your timing right, either early evening or late, as around 8pm in my experience the queues have to be seen to be believed, it can take up to an hour before you get your food! Still, highly recommended! A must for any fish and chips fan!

Great place to visit if you are a fish ‘n’ chip conniseur! The battered fish and chips are cooked traditionally in beef dripping — yes an instant heart attack but has to be tried. The grilled fish is done in vegetable oil. Well priced and service is good(as long as you don’t try and get in the door early!) Menu is simple but effective — everything you could want! Nice setting and free car park right outside. Gift shop next door — but don’t be fooled — Rick has some batter mix there for £3 — you think their must be some special ingredients in it — but alas, just flour and anticaking agents — come on Rick — bit of a joke, aye?
