The Castell Mynach sits on Llantrisant Road just off junction 34 of the M4. Having recently undergone a refurbishment and a menu overhaul, I can 100% say that the pub/restaurant has gone up tenfold in my estimation. Having been there previously and been disappointed with my meal, which seemed a little on the small side for the price I’d paid, I finally decided to give them a second chance and was not only impressed but fully converted. As someone who spends more time in the gym than the actual dumbbells, I often find it hard to find a good balance of taste and healthiness when eating at a restaurant, regularly having to sacrifice one for the other; but on this occasion the Castell Mynach managed to hit the nail right on the proverbial bonce. Restricting myself to the healthy options I somehow managed to resist the urge to annihilate a mixed grill of the usual farmyard trio of pigs, chickens and cows. Instead, I managed to unearth a hidden gem placed at the bottom of the menu, out of sight of prying eyes — a fish mixed grill. I’d never heard of a fish mixed grill and, as someone who loves fish, I jumped at the opportunity to try it. What sat in front of me quarter of an hour later was a large 18″ long rectangular dinner plate with a healthy selection of batter-free fish and prawns, with a side helping of new potatoes With a plateful of red snapper, swordfish, mahi mahi and king prawn skewers, accompanied in their final farewell by a handful of asparagus, spring onions and a good helping of new potatoes, I was swimming in a sea of unrivalled health and flavour… that sea happened to be void of any living fish but I was swimming in it nonetheless. At the steep but not unreasonable price of £12.95, it isn’t something I’d splash out for every day of the week, but having tasted it, I will definitely be ordering it on my next visit. Well done, Castell Mynach.
