I’ve passed this a few times driving past, so I bookmarked it and decided to go here on a Saturday evening with the Boyff for dinner. Well, I won’t make that mistake again. It wasn’t horrendous, but was definitely Meh. When we walked in we went straight to the bar and ordered our drinks. It was a but confusing as they have a table with all the menus on and numerous chalk boards, so I didn’t know if we were meant to stand there and wait, or mosey on in and take a seat. Anyway, we asked at the bar, they said they were fully booked(which to be fair, it was a Saturday) although we could see numerous tables that had nobody sitting at them. We were informed that we could order our food from a non-restaurant table, just remember the table number when ordering. I ordered the chicken and leek pie, boyff ordered a starter of lamb koftas and main of steak with an additional extra of langoustine. We waiting a considerable time for the starter to come out and these were nice enough. Then we waited and waited for the main. All the other diners had been served, so we were post dinner rush, so couldn’t understand why such a long wait. Around the 40 minute mark, the waitress came over and said that they had run out of langoustine and handed the boyff £4 «sorry about that». Anyway, it is now past half 9 at night and I am hungry and getting tired. I just want my food. Finally it arrived. Mine — Chips were warm, and seemed like they had been waiting on the side for a while, as were the peas. The pie content was quite low and seemed about half the content it should be. His –Same chips, burnt tomato, steak that was of a wetherspoon quality. We had to go up to the bar to ask for some mayo and mustard as there was none on the tables, or cutlery areas and we weren’t offered any either. This request was met with some funny looks. Once we had finished, Boyff went up to select his pudding that he had already paid for, this caused great confusion, the waitress had said this had been refunded, boyff explained that was for the langoustine that they had ran out of. It went round and round in circles and in the end, the boyff decided it wasn’t worth it. We didn’t finish our drinks, we just got up and left. Toilets were a bit naff. In the main pub, lovely open fires and décor. I think if it is for just a drink that you want to go for, then fine, anything else, don’t bother. I certainly won’t be!

This is a great ‘English Country Pub’. We went here twice in two days, it was that good! I had the scampi and the smoked mackerel, and would recommend them both. Quaint atmosphere, good friendly service, and quality food. And the best part is, they have a phenomenally good value three course lunch deal for 10 quid.(Or two courses for 8 quid). It’s an amazing deal!

Very disappointing experience all round. I have never felt the need to write a negative review for anywhere before but on this occasion feel very compelled to do so as it may help other people avoid making the mistake we did last night. I pass the Ye Olde Greene Manne everyday on way to and from work and thought it appeared an attractive venue and always looked busy from the amount of cars parked in the car park so last night my friend and I decided to give it a go as weather was nice and felt it would be a good place to sit outside and eat. When we arrived a lot of the tables outside were empty but still dirty with the odd glass, full ashtrays and empty plates etc and they stayed like that for a long period I even had to clean the table we sat at with a napkin. The bar inside is on the small side but pleasant décor unfortunately the atmosphere was not on the friendly side and the two members of staff seen were unfriendly and almost appeared indifferent at our presence. The main reason for this negative review is the food which couldn’t have been worse, when we initially went to order we were told there were a few items unavailable which wasn’t too much off a problem as it was late in the evening but what we did order took an unacceptable time to arrive and when it did arrive both meals were completed dried out as if they had been left under heat for ages and forgotten unfortunately everything was tasteless and chewy. When the food arrived we were not even offered sauces or salt & pepper and the waiter couldn’t even be bothered to make sure we had enough cutlery or napkins when we asked another member of staff for more they made us feel we were being an nuisance. At no point were we asked if everything was ok and when we had finished what we could have, the plates were just left in front of us for over a half an hour despite three different members of staff passing our table numerous times and even looking at the plates, they were only removed when I personally moved them myself to the next table. We didn’t complain as we were certain that this would only make our experience worse as the whole atmosphere of place and staff was that off not caring anyway. On a whole the food and service was awful, Food way too expensive for what it is, staff unfriendly, unhelpful and miserable looking. Probably very nice for a drink if your not too bothered about the service.

Well we called at lunchtime today after attending Mount Vernon Hospital(3 October 2011). A notice informed us that owing to imminent refurbishment, the pub was unable to offer a full food and a full drinks menu. Our drink requests included Sparkling Water which was not available. Lemonade was not available either. Choices of food were extremely limited considering the pub was not closing until the end of the week: at least 4 of our selections could not be provided. We finally settled on a choice of dishes and were given a large numbered bottle which would help us to be served. One hour later yes we were that patient! I asked what had happened to our order. Members of staff had passed our table from time to time, so it was easy to see we were waiting for food. After a while, the staff member came across to us and asked, What exactly did you order?. Enough was enough: we paid for our drinks and left. Very poor considering it was Monday, and the pub would presumably expect to be open till refurbishment at the end of the week.

Another Ember Inn in Northwood — just a little further up the road from the other one The Gate. The Green Man is a quiet pub, small inside with only two sofa’s but easy to get a seat no matter what day it is! It has a massive garden — in fact a couple of gardens which go half way round the pub and so it is fantastic on a summer afternoon. The food is Ember Inn staple pub food — lots off offers –Grill night, curry night etc. The staff are very friendly and it feels like a nice local pub and you often see the same faces in there. It’s a very long walk from the station though so unless you live very nearby then you have to drive or get a taxi which is a shame but probably what makes it so quiet and peaceful!
