It’s okay. Recommended because it was dog friendly, the server was very friendly, it’s the menu that needs help. I ordered the burger, expected the chipotle sauce and fried onions as it stated in the menu-but they added some strange spices to the burger that just made it taste. Well… I won’t say awful, but it didn’t taste like a burger and the bun fell apart the moment I picked it up. My husband ordered the fishfinger sandwich. Listed in the menu as «fish finger sandwich» no other description. Thankfully the server mentioned the tartar sauce which he asked to be on the side. It came with both sides of the bread slathered with the stuff. Being British he didn’t ask for them to take it back, but at the end of the meal he’d only earthen a few bits and the server took it off our bill. She was great. We gave her a big tip. But be warned about the food. It is not adequately described on the menu.

Stopped by here after a very long day on a hot and windy Camber Sands. It was everything we hoped for. Comfortable seating, a great selection of drinks on tap(and bottled) a small but well presented menu. Me and My partner opted for the Southern Fried Chicken and we can both HIGHLY recommend it. The service was slightly slow, but this was obviously because the one waitress was trying to see to what looked like around 30 tables. The bar staff where polite and welcoming. If your passing by this neck of the woods and looking for a nice pub that manages to deliver on both the food and drink front, pop in, enjoy the ice cold Leffe and relax.

Ate here after a recommendation that it was the perfect place to go after a walk with the dogs along Camber Sands beach and with spacious interior and warm, friendly atmosphere it definitely was. The pub itself is quite small, but with the lightly painted walls and fair amount of natural light, has an open and modern feel to it. The staff were friendly, attentive and great with the dogs, made us feel more than welcome. Its menu seemed quite good, but unnecessarily complicated in places — the ribs I ordered came with string fries, which were too thin too keep warm. Overall though can say we will definitely be stopping in again next time we’re down there.

I know pubs that are great for dinning. I know pubs that are great for drinking. The Ship in Rye is one of the very rare places that manages both. We visited there twice in a recent long weekend. The first time was to dine. My brother was very impressed with the wide choice of real cider. We all enjoyed the food and the accompanying service. The log fire added to the atmosphere. The next night we returned and just drunk. The cocktail menu impressed me, but as I was visiting from US, I drunk their excellent draught guest beers. My mother adored the local apple juice, whilst brother and sister quaffed from the aforementioned extensive cider menu.

Great, funky, gastro pub. More Brighton than Rye After 3 days of fine dining at The Mermaid inn, and before we returned to London, we had lunch at The Ship. It was really excellent. It seems to be a hang out spot for the local hipsters. It’s spacious and the décor is stripped back and faded and natural. The bar was buzzing, with people lounging around and the dining room felt like being in a funky sailor’s cabin. The food was really fresh and wholesome and the service was efficient and fast, but never rushed. They have 10 rooms to rent too and offer a totally different kind of Rye experience.

This review is for the pub component, as I decided to have dinner in a place with history. While the food was not to my liking(herb crusted fish — I swear, there was a strong bread crust — and french fries), the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff and locals compensates. According to my guidebook, the bloodthirsty and dangerous smuggler gang Hawkhurst, met here regularly in the 1700s to plan their misdeeds. There is a smuggler lyric painted on the ceiling beams. The overall decoration is modest(no trendy tables or seats), creating a comforting familiar vibe where you go to enjoy time not impress anyone. Although the ocean is 2 km away, there is a hint of maritime motif to its decoration. Cute and simple all around.
