The Apothecary Coffee Shop

Super cute place and location. My reason for lower stars is that there were only two vegan options– soup and tea cakes– and I was still hungry after breakfast. Bonus points for having Biscoff biscuits with the coffee. The rest of my family loves the coffee, tea, and crepes!
Plenty of options for vegetarians, not so many for vegans.

Imagine a coffee shop set in an old corner apothecary. There is room after room with different styles and eclectic decorations and furniture. We sat at the front next to the old apothecary drawers. (less naughty than that sounds). Disappointingly they didn’t open, but we still had fun discussing the weird sounding names on the front.
I had a coffee with a splash of semi-​skimmed (grrrr) milk. It was perfectly nice, and came with a free (or 12p if you bought it separately) bought-​in coffee biscuit. The girls serving were very sweet and friendly, although obviously a bit run off their feet.
I was a little concerned that the cakes and delicious looking pastries were left out on the counter with no cover and several flies buzzing about. Also, although pretty ready with the tap water, the glasses were little more than thimbles and I had to ask for a refill twice.
I did really like this place. Unlike the previous reviewer, I didn’t encounter the manager/​owner, so perhaps that was the reason.
As usual, I am docking a star for not having skimmed milk. Honestly, what does it take to get just one pint of the stuff every day?!

Wonderful location on the corner of High St and East St in this beautiful town. They do not open until 9 am but the breakfast was wonderful — poached eggs on toasted wholewheat bread — perfectly prepared. The coffee was excellent too.
Why two stars then? It was so cold inside! They have no heating in the place and the owner said if I wanted to pay for it she would put it in. I suggested that my 8 pound breakfast was paying for it. She (Helen) suggested I put on a sweater. Wonderful.
I will possibly add a star when I next visit if the place is even slightly warm, including the welcome. Owner not bothered about customer satisfaction obviously. Great location — great food — rubbish attitude on part of owner — her staff are friendly and professional. Vote with your feet and walk 20 yards further down High Street for warm cosy breakfast options.
