Thermonuclear flavor! I didn’t know Indian could be this good, and interesting without being weird and distasteful. Next time we are in Salisbury this is where we are headed.

Our second night in Salisbury, we decided to follow the Unilocal recommendation and we did not regret it! Unusual and delicious flavors throughout. I had the rack of lamb which was delicious, my wife had a chicken and rice dish that she loved too. We’ll be back.

We were wandering around on Christmas Day in little town Salisbury, and unsurprisingly, everything was closed. Well, actually a bit surprising, because I thought maybe there would be a Burger King or a Chinese place that remained open — but nope, ghost town, except for a couple lunch spots that were obviously fully booked. That is until we stumbled upon this place(and a Thai place next to it) that remained open. A good Indian place, open on Christmas day with almost no patrons? We lucked out and immediately went inside. They had a special Christmas lunch 3-course menu, mostly of Indian fusion items. We started with some complimentary papadums which came with 5 condiments. The strawberry and raspberry pickled onions were especially tasty and addictive, but the usual chutneys were delicious as well. I had some curried black tiger prawns as an appetizer, and an aubergine and chickpea curry for my main dish. Both were delicious, and was presented in a nice way. Between the dishes they also gave us a rather big serving of strawberry sorbet as a palate cleanser, which was pleasant. I ended the meal with some spring roll looking mango dessert, but that was more disappointing than the sorbet. However, it was not bad — they merely set high expectations. Service was good in the beginning but sparse at the end, and we struggled to get our bill. But rating on the food alone, it was definitely worth a trip, and like I said, we lucked out.

Service(4): prompt, polite, and attentive without hovering; could have been slightly more personal. I’m not sure how knowledgable the waitstaff are about the ingredients and menu, but we were in a bit of a hurry, so that could’ve been our fault. Overall, they seemed like nice guys eager for us to enjoy our meal… and we did. Ambience(4): modern, medium-sized, not too noisy Food(4.7): Indian food with an unexpected twist. The dishes we had seemed clearly, authentically Indian-inspired, but contained unique and unexpected ingredients that complemented and enhanced the traditional flavors – e.g., roasted strawberries and a molasses-like flavor in one of the vegetable curries; fennel and a seemingly Chinese-inspired sauce in a chicken dish; etc. The raspberry-kiwi lassi was fairly good – not great, but pretty good – and I give them points for trying something different.(Am I the only one who finds it odd to get an ice cube in a lassi?) We were in a hurry, so didn’t have time to try the desserts. I know that doesn’t quite work out to 5 stars, but I also know that I had a 5-star reaction to the first bite(and several more after that), we’d absolutely return, and we’d readily recommend it to others. Based on this one visit, I think it’s one of the very few UK restaurants I’ve tried that could hold its own in the impressive Washington, DC restaurant market.(I don’t mean that to sound snotty; it’s just my frame of reference.) Maybe the key is to go in with modest expectations, which I’m clearly not facilitating.

Does Anokaa mean«peculiar service?» We arrived at around 11:45 and they issued us to our table. For the next 8 minutes, no one came to our table to ask for drinks or to tell us that they open at 12 noon. We were the only people sitting there and I almost left. Then someone came and took our drink orders. He told us they were finishing the buffet. Once it was«ready,» a waiter informed us and told us to start with the appetizers(the main entrees weren’t ready yet). The apps were good, but certainly not nearly the best I’ve ever had. Then we waited for the main entrees. Tick-tock. Finally, it’s done and we went up when we thought they put the main trays in(no no told us). They had a very simple entrée line — rice, a chicken dish, veggie dish and potatoes. They were good, but nothing memorable. Would I come back here if I were in town again? Probably not.

We went for the buffet lunch, so maybe didn’t get the best sampling of what they can do. The food was pretty mediocre, and the drinks we ordered to go with the meal took a really long time to arrive. I would agree with the prior review though that the interior and the server’s outfits were lovely, my main disappointment was with the food.

We ate here for the first time tonight. We had the seafood medley to start, lite, but visually beautiful and fantastic flavors. We split the tandoori lamb chops, what a fantastic treat. This is the best restaurant I have eaten at anywhere in my UK travels and tops 99 percent of the ones I have eaten at in the US. Don’t miss this restaurant. The staff is very attentive, did separate checks for our party of 12, what more could you ask for?

Great buffet. The fish curry was amazing. The morsels of king fish were still tender. The date nan is to die for. The service was attentive but not too intrusive. A good start to a trek to see the cathedral.

This was by far the best meal we had during our month-long trip to the United Kingdom. In fact, this would have been a top meal even if we had been eating back home in San Francisco(aka Foodieville, USA). Absolutely fantastic. The restaurant itself is very pretty, with modern Indian décor and the servers dressed up in colorful uniforms. All of the servers were very nice and attentive, but not hovering. And now, the star of the show, the food. We started with strips of Welsh lamb for an appetizer, and they set the bar very high for deliciousness. The meat was perfectly tender, and the drizzles of sauces all over the plate tasted wonderful. I don’t mind saying that I used my fork to scrape up every last bit of sauce after the meat was gone. My husband’s main dish was the twice cooked Goan pork curry vindaloo style — very, very tasty. Everything was perfectly cooked and flavored. My main dish was the duck jaalsha — absolute heaven. The meat was done just right, which can be hard with duck. I especially loved the whole dried apricots that were in the sauce, it was a perfect compliment to the duck. We also ordered two naans, the garlic and coriander naan and the date and ginger naan. Absolutely delicious, by far the best naan I’ve had in my life. We stuffed ourselves silly on the naan, and kept tearing off little bits after we were full for«just one last bite». Overall, this meal was one of the highlights of our trip and one of my fondest memories. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Anokaa means ‘something out of the ordinary’ and this Indian restaurant with-a-twist truly is. The décor is modern and feels intimate and the clever use of lighting, especially on the screen wall and bubble tanks, is really special. The menu is varied and they will happily accommodate requests. Executive chef, Puban Kumar Bhaniyar, has designed an intriguing blend of flavours that make menu decisions very difficult. The medley of canapés starter was delicious and I followed that with Tiger prawns with a Kerala-influenced sauce. The dessert menu was far and away the best I have seen in an Indian restaurant and both our desserts were beautifully presented and tasted just as good as they looked. 3 courses for 2 with beer(& poppadoms and 4 scrummy pickles) came to £75. Service is friendly and efficient. Highly recommended.

We turned up at 9:30 on Saturday, 12th Feb 2011, the earliest booking we could get! My girlfriend & I joined a queue after squeezing into the restaurant — it was mayhem! After a ten minute wait, we were seated. The atmosphere was buzzing & the place was frantically busy but not as large as you think until you realise the number of mirrors! We started off sharing a mixed grill. OK, not too imaginative but tasty. For the main, I chose the Plyaza chicken & a jug of water! My girlfriend went for the cooler Kerella style Black Tiger prawns. We added a naan, Garlic spiced spinach and extra rice for my somewhat warm curry! Warm as it was, with plenty of water & a few bottles of Cobra, the flavours abounded. The tiger prawns also were great & the spinach equally tasty with just the right amount of garlic as not to overpower. So, the food was as good as expected but not cheap! Leilah wasn’t yet done so we finished off with a lime & something cheesecake which I assisted in consuming! Leilah brought Piglet with her who sat in regal pinkness. The lady on the adjacent table struck up a conversation when both our respective partners where powdering their noses regarding our inanimate companion. They lived locally & had been several times before. The guy got completely sh*tfaced but was graceful enough! We will return despite the cost. A memorable night was had. The bar in The Red Lion Hotel was still open for a nightcap for residents — we slept well!

I visited with a group of family and friends on a Saturday for my birthday in September. We had a reservation for noon and on arrival the restaurant was empty but was very busy within 20 minutes or so. We ordered the 3 course lunchtime buffet at £7.95 a head. Starters were mixed — mixed salads, naan bread, and other unidentifiable but delicious dishes both hot and cold. There was a choice of two currys for mains; one chicken and one vegetarian dish, rice, more naan bread and side dishes. Desert was mixed fruit with mango. The food was self service but waiters were on hand for drinks and help. We mentioned my mother was coeliac which means she is wheat intolerant and a waiter dashed off and returned with the chef who escorted her around each dish and explained what she could and couldn’t eat. The service was excellent and the staff very helpful. The food was wonderful and with drinks a party of 5 bill came to less than £50. We have returned on two occasions since and have just booked for New Years Eve.

This is a upper class Indian and the price reflect the image which is very clean, and slightly too posh. The menu doesn’t vary from your typical Indian at all really, the food was tasty and well presented however the price leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The staff are pleasant enough and the service is speedy. Perhaps ok for a special occasion or treat, but if your after an everyday Indian meal this could leave you out of pocket.
