Fish portions were substantial, staff was friendly, and fish was nicely cooked. The chips however were a bit on the soggy side. Peas reasonably good too.

J and I came here about 8.15pm on Friday night to pick up dinner after doing the weekly shop. I don’t know what we expected, but certainly not that this would be the highlight of our week! The staff were laughing and joking(and getting customers served) and we were included in their banter. We laughed so much and other customers joined in so it was a great atmosphere. When our food was ready, we were almost sorry to go. Our sorrow was quickly forgotten when we got home and tucked into our haddock and chips. It was still really hot and tasted delicious. The batter was thin and very crisp and the chips were some of the best chipshop style chips I’ve had in ages. We wolfed it all down in no time. Stobys is part of the Harlees group of fish n chip shops. The menu has something for everyone(and some things not even on the menu– like southern fried chicken burgers) and multiple portion sizes for big and small appetites. We had 1 small and 1 regular haddock, 2 regular chips and a mushy peas for about £12. Bargain! The mushy peas were a bit bland, so make sure you get salt and vinegar on your chips — it makes a massive improvement to the peas.

I’m a northerner, so chips are to me what tomatoes are to Italians, which means I’m a bit of a connoisseur. So, does Sobey’s measure up to a fine old munching test on a hot day in July? Actually, they’re not bad. I ordered a cone for £1, which is what you might call a ‘light’ Liverpudlian antipasti. The top ones were salty and vinegary, but the bottom ones were plain and potatoey.(Shaking a cone of hot chips isn’t recommended in close proximity to children and dogs.) Perhaps I’ll go back one day and try a fish. Until then, rest assured the chips won’t kill you, but squeezing into their tight, restricted restaurant space just might.

Nice chips in a quirky building. It’s worth sitting down in the restaurant upstairs if it’s not too busy

Used to be the best fish and chips in town in years gone by, and I am talking some years now. It used to be that when the Charter Fair came to town in October, a few hours at the fair would build up an appetite for Stoby’s fish and chips. I hope it is still the same now for many.

This is the chippy of choice if your a tourist and in town. Its situated just a foot step off the market and is really popular. The chip shop is small but has an upstairs seating area upstairs too. They sell all the typical sausage, fish, chips, pickled eggs. They can give you a open cone so you can walk around and eat your chips, or a closed portion. The prices are good and the service is fast. This really is a place to try out if you appreciate good honest fish and chips! Follow the smell to find this place.
