Lovely place, very friendly staff and great food. We popped up on a Saturday night without booking. The waitress offered us to come back later and it was worth it. I had the potted ox tongue and the meat pie of the day with Yorkshire puddings. Was my first ox tongue so I didn’t really know what I should expect. The pie was nice and the puddings excellent. We wanted to taste local stuff so they let us taste the Henderson ‘s relish and the Yorkshire wine. We didn’t like it but at least we know We paid 70P for 2 courses + 3 courses meals and a bottle of wine. Note: It’s not easy to park around.

Bloody good feed. We came on pie night specifically to have Yorkshire pudding. I wasn’t disappointed. Freshly made and delicious proper Yorkshire pudding. Two of them! With gravy! Rock on. For mains it was cottage pie, which was like shepherds pie and really hot, but excellent. I finished off with a port and was rolled out of the front door. What a top night out.

Firstly, I can’t believe there hasn’t been more reviews written about this place. It’s a very popular and award winning establishment, which was transformed by Gordon Ramsay on his kitchen nightmares T.V. programme. I visited the restaurant for the first time this week to celebrate my birthday and I will definitely be making a trip again. It was probably the best meal I have ever eaten in this country. During the week they run an offer of; 2 courses for £14 or 3 for £16. The price and quality matched together puts most places to shame. Particularly when you consider that you can pay £10+ for a main in most chain restaurants. On to the foodWell, firstly everything in the restuarant is locally sourced, with the majority coming from Sheffield/South Yorkshire. The seasonality and local ingredients was evident throughout the evening. For my starter I had their Kelham Island Beer Battered fishcake. This was more like ‘scallop’ to me, but was very good nonetheless. The fishcake came with mushy peas and homemade tomato ketchup, with the latter having a lovely sweet/sour balance and then underlying taste of cloves. Then on to the main, and this is where the value for money aspect comes in, I had Whirlow Farm lamb. This consisted of rump and breast and was accompanied by wild garlic, sweetbread and douphinoise potato with pan jus. The meat was cooked and seasoned to perfection and all the vegetables had been given plenty of attention and therefore tasted incredible I always see this as a good precursor to a great dish. Often vegetables get badly treated and tast bland, but this is not the case here! We also ordered a side order of beets to share between two, which was enough and they again were perfect. For my dessert I had Whirlow Farm rhubarb cheesecake. It had a great creamy taste and was accompanied by a tuille and a kind of jellied rhubarb strip. I found the dessert enjoyable(I’m not a big sweet person), but I felt that the archetypal sour flavour of rhubarb wasn’t prominent enough. As for the drinks, they have a wide range of wines, spirits and beers(of which some are local) and these too are reasonably priced. The décor of the restaurant is very nice and has a lot of character to it as well. It is relatively small though, so I’d advise booking to avoid disappointment(you can book online too!). Overall I had a fantastic evening, which rounded my birthday off nicely. It’s great to see care and thought put into the food and the place as a whole. I like their ethos a lot and I shall definitely be returning soon.

Silversmith’s makes what I think of as gourmet British comfort food. Their ingredients are high-quality and locally sourced, which appeals to Rachel’s inner hippy. The menu is a bit adventurous, which leads to mostly very good dishes, but we’ve had one or two mediocre dishes. Their cocktails are excellent as well. The staff is very engaged and fun, but sometimes they lack that kind of always-on attentiveness that I equate with outstanding service, which I attribute to them being possibly understaffed. It can be hard to get in to Silversmith’s — it has a good reputation and a small dining area, so make sure to get a reservation. Also, if you can hit them on Wednesday or Thursday they have discounted meals, which works out to be a great deal for very good food. We’ve been several times and definitely plan to return!

I was very excited to have my very first English meal in the UK, and to add to my excitement, it was pie night at Silversmiths!!! What that meant, I wasn’t quite sure… That is until the waiter brought me my menu. There was nothing but pies to select from as a main course. I decided on the Chicken and Mushroom pie with Yorkshire pudding as a starter. All this time I was thinking I was going to have to order an apple or pecan pie for dinner. Then I thought, why in the world would they bring me pudding as an appetiser? I quickly found out that Yorkshire pudding isn’t pudding at all. It turned out to be a fluffy roll made of pancake batter that’s cooked in the oven and then served with gravy that resembled french onion soup. It was all a bit bland so I reached for the Henderson Relish and poured it on. Keep in mind this is not the typical sweet pickle relish that we know of back in the US. In fact, the Henderson’s Relish is very similar to Worcestershire Sauce. Afterwards, my pie came out steaming hot. It was exactly like a small chicken pot pie. The only notable difference was that this pie did not have a bottom crust. However, it was all quite delicious. I washed it all down with a micro brew beer called Kelham Island Pale Rider. This beer was extremely bitter and had about 5% alcohol content, but felt like much more. I left the restaurant feeling full and satisfied.

This restaurant is fantastic. It’s a little hidden and away from the beaten tract but its well worth going out of the normal path for this place. The place is small so booking is a must and the staff are very accommodating and will ring with cancellations if possible. The décor is modern and relaxing with a good use of light so it’s neither dark nor bright. The location is near street parking and a car park and 2 minutes away from the bus station. The menu is small with only a small selection available at any one time but it regularly changes and gets updated. The food was divine, I had steak for the main and it was cooked to perfection. I did notice that on a table close by that the steak was cooked to their liking, the owner took it straight back and fetch another to their liking saying they understand and would rather they got a steak they enjoyed rather then paying for one they did not. This showed they dealt with problems quickly and efficiently. The staff were very friendly and genuine, also helpful knowing what was available and about the drinks too. It is on the pricey side but for the quality of food its well worth every penny. I would rather pay the money here and guarantee getting a good meal then spending a bit less for a mediocre meal.
