Named the Stag Hotel, I have no idea if this is a hotel or not. But it certainly is a pub. And better, they have some unusual beers on offer. Right there, I’m sold. Six of us took the recommendation of the concierge at the hotel nearby where most of us where staying(after he recommended his own place, of course) and it was a short walk around the corner to the Stag. After placing our beer orders(I had an interesting golden pale ale called White Swan), we put in for dinner. Fish cakes to start were fried but still quite tasty with a tangy dipping sauce. But the main was what really made it for me. The lamb shank was served upright in the bowl. A huge portion of meat that just slid right off the bone into the mashed potatoes and gravy and boiled cabbage. No knife needed here, I could just turn it into mouth-sized bites with the side of the fork. Good service. Instead of having one of us hussling beer refills back and forth, we just ordered them at the bar and the staff brought them out to us on a tray. There is are outside tables for the smokers and a glass-enclosed conservatory so that you can get the best of the warm sunshine and stay out of the rain.

A very nice, clean welcoming pub. Never seen it particularly busy but is pretty good in terms of food. Norhing remarkable on the drink front. Nice outside area including a playground for the kids. They provide newspapers so it’s a good place to go and sit and relax.
