SeaCity Museum

Diese Museum erzählt alles über die Englische Seefahrt. Von Southampton startete damals auch die Titanic in ihre Todesfahrt. Daran erinnert eine kleine Titanic Collage im Eisberg. Wir waren öfters mit AIDA in Southampton und keiner der Kapitäné wollte nach Möglichkeit am Liegepplatz ankern, von dem die Titanic zu ihrer letzten Fahrt ausgelaufen ist. Der Eintritt kostet in das Museum p. P. 6,50 £.

I wanted to visit the «Titanic museum», and thus came across this institution, which opened up in 2012. I had no expectations, just a thirst for information: I personally totally enjoyed the experience, while my UK friend thought it left something to be desired.
The Titanic-​related exhibit has interesting facts on the numerous staff and workers from the Southampton area who served on the ship: there is actually a floor map of the city, where a red dot designates the address of each local citizen who worked on Titanic. It is overwhelming to think how many of the locals perished, and how deeply it affected not only the family, but the local economy, too. There are areas to see the artifacts off the boat [tools, dishes, menus, dance cards…], and actual documentary film footage of some ship decks and chambers. For kids, there is a dress-​up area where they can put on costumes from that time period, and parents can snap pics [ the only area where photos are allowed]. You can steer the boat around an iceberg [someone had a sense of humor], and try to keep up with the coal demand to keep the engines running; or you can leisurely rest on an upper deck chair. There is a short documentary, with comments from actual survivors and /​or their families, that’s quite interesting.
The museum has two other exhibits — on immigrants to the Southampton area, and a «funkier» modern approach to a Titanic-​related games, products and merchandize created through the years.
There is a café and a gift shop, as well. The museum is located in a modern building in the heart of the town, a short walking distance from the train station.

Spur of the moment decision to pop in and ‘do something’ during the school holidays! And a good decision it was too! Cost £25 for family of 4 and there was plenty to keep us occupied! Main feature of museum is the story of the Titanic, which was interesting for all ages! Lots of activities for the kids, worksheet to fill out, interactive touch screens kept them busy and real life accounts from the few who survived really created an atmosphere of how horrific the experience was! So much here that no ‘big screen’ production of what ‘might have’ happened could compare with the reality of that fateful day! A couple of the interactive activities failed to work but a member of staff was quick to report this and it was fixed in no time! The gift shop has a decent selection of goods and the ‘Galley’ restaurant was priced as expected, £3.50 for a sarnie (which was very substantial indeed) and £1.80 for a cuppa, staff polite and helpful! Highly recommend!
