This Café Rouge remodeled since we were last there! Very nice atmosphere, bright yet intimate with lighter colors than the previous dark color scheme. Although Café Rouge is a chain restaurant, they really offer excellent French food, and not in the fancy tablecloth way you would usually think of when you hear ‘French restaurant’, but in a very relaxed, casual setting. Surprisingly good portion sizes too! We ordered two orders of garlic bread to share as an appetizer, between the four of us, and it was wayyy too much, especially on top of our other food. I also had a beautiful dish of leeks, mushrooms, and I’m not sure what else in cream sauce, with bread. Surprisingly light and delicately flavored for a cream dish, really outstanding. And hey, we even had a genuine French waitress!

Okay for a sweet snack and a hot drink at any time of day really but far from my favourite place to be. If you’re a creature of habit who is drawn to brands Café Rouge is fine.

I like this Café Rouge because it’s quite small and feels more intimate. There’s a local, busy buzz at peak times, so it’s worth booking to guarantee a table. I love cheese so, for me, the baked Camembert is heavenly. The lamb shanks always appear popular. They have a kids menu and the usual colouring tools are provided to keep them occupied — their meals are also reasonably sized and the ice cream is delish(quality checked and approved by yours truly). Can you have a romantic family meal? If you get a table to the rear of the restaurant, I think so.
