I can’t say much for their regular pub food, which seems to be a weakness according to other Unilocalers, but we loved their Sunday roasts! Only a tenner and you get a huge plate of delicious meat, veg, potatoes and more. They definitely don’t know the meaning of restraint when it comes to gravy — our plates were swimming in it. No complaints there from me though! Their potatoes were a particular joy, nicely seasoned and cooked really well. While the roast beef was just fine, the pork was really nice and the crackling was divine. They have a nice selection of beers at reasonable prices and what seems like a standard choice in this town of Addlestone’s cloudy cider, which is one of my favourites. The staff were friendly and helpful, and we got a nice seat by the fireplace which was such a joy. If you want to go for their roast, either get there early or later in the lunch hours. There were a couple groups, even just couples, who had to leave because the pub was full up!

Oh Six Bells I really wanted your food to be awesome but you have come up way too short :( On a lazy Tuesday early evening we found ourselves at the Six Bells hoping that it might prove to be a trusty local with fab food. We ordered the bruschetta for our son, the nicoise for me and the fish and chips for the husband. The bruschetta was a white bread roll topped with cherry tomatoes marinated in balsamic vinegar, a slab of cheese melted over it and then drowned further in balsamic, not the light and healthy dish I had expected. The nicoise was marginally better with good potatoes and green beans, only minorly sludgy lettuce and a well over cooked tuna fillet. Finally, the fish and chips were a bit boney and so so. All a bit sad and disappointing. Oh well, I understand that there are more pubs per square mile in St Albans than anywhere else in England, so fingers crossed that one of the others proves to be awesome and become our new local…

This is a nice little pub. In the town of pubs it is a good stop for a night out. Plenty of drink selection. Friendly staff. Good food. All round a nice place to stop for a pint. Small garden area and little car park.

Stopped here for lunch whilst visiting friends in St Albans. It’s near to the beautiful park and along a cute little street. The place seems to have a fair bit of history and this seems to be an old, old pub. Judging by the stickers on the door, this place is a regular in the Good Beer Guide and is probably a safe bet for plenty of local ales and beers. For lunch only, it was OK. Decent enough food without being amazing. It reminded me of the sort of pub food I got used to growing up in Wales as opposed to London pub food, by which I mean London gastropub food. So sandwiches with a few crisps on your plate, sides of chips, sunday roasts, fish and chips etc.

The nice pubs with beer gardens in St Albans could almost blur into each other if you visit a few in the same day. I don’t mean that in a bad waysome of them are quite similar, because that is what people like and I like this pub. The St Alban’s pub checklist seems to readreal ale. check, nice beer garden check, live music weekend evenings check. This is another place that does this very well and it’s location near the park is a plus too.
