A no frills, quality pub, serving a good selection of well kept real ales and craft beers. Timothy Taylor Landlord is always on, but they have a rotating selection of quality guest real ales too. Although some of the«guests» are brewed on the premises and more than hold their own, some sell out very quickly. A changing menu of quality home made food and knowledgeable, friendly bar staff make this the number 1 pub in an area not short of good pubs. Also has a nice beer garden and occasional beer festivals. Go for the fish and chips on a Friday. They also have a fine range of wines at reasonable prices. You can reserve tables. Deservedly, very popular!

Getting a really good feeling about St Albans there are a lot of good pubs not great pubs but good pubs I n abundance :). this again has the same ripped out feel, not cosy but its welcoming and like at home St Albans folk obviously hate being at home watching Telly. this pub has a good range of beer good quality but yes pricey :(

I love St Albans for having loads of nice pubs tucked away down nice suburban streets selling good food and great beer. This is a little pub with just that tag. A whole bunch of guest ales and ciders are available. The staff are great at serving customers. For those that like a quiet game on the sunday afternoon there are a selection of board games provided by the pub. Great place to pop in for a pint.

The part of St Albans in which this pub is located is really spoilt for choice. I saw a couple of real ale pubs within a minutes walk of this one. I’m glad I picked this one though. 5 real ales on pump, including a couple I had never heard of before. I enjoyed an excellent pint of The Rev. James and was a bit disappointed that I didn’t have time to stay for another, they seem to rotate their selection of ales on a regular basis(they have a list for the month on the tables) I would have liked to have tried some of the food too, it seemed quite popular as the friendly barmaid bustled in and out of the kitchen with orders. In fact they have a weekly international food night, which I think is an excellent idea. Curry one weekWienerschnitzl the nextsounds brilliant! The layout is slightly unusual, it doesn’t quite feel like a traditional pub, but it is hard to explain why. I’m not sure why but it almost felt to me more like a pub in a coastal town. I could just be talking nonsense though as less than 1% of my drinking has been accomplished within proximity of a sea or ocean of some kind. Outside there are a couple of tables out front and a raised beer garden to the side, which is a particularly nice place to spend an hour or few in the summer.

This is a good pub in all ways but one — whenever I have been in it has smelled very strongly of fish, which is very off-putting. Otherwise it is a great pub with good beer and good service.

Great food, particularly the Sunday Roast(yes, they have a veggie option — photo: ) and Friday night fish and chips, and a wonderful rotating selection of Real Ales compliment the friendly service, large beer garden and central location of this lovely back street pub. Kisska27, I wonder who you are, been going in on Sundays for years! Blue Bus, well, I know who you are. ;-)

I used to work at this place. Really fond memories, the landlord is a really nice guy. I’ve been back to the white heart tap recently for a beer festival. The atmosphere was friendly, as always. We had some really strong cider, I think it was called Black Rat??? Knock out stuff 7.00%, left me legless after one pint. They serve really nice food too, Hoegaarden battered cod with chunky chips and mushy peas the best fish & chips dish I’ve ever had!

This is another of St. Alban’s great real ale pubs. It’s not bang in the middle of town but even so it’s normally pretty busy. The beer is always good and I love sitting in the back garden in summer. They have live music ocassionally and I’ve seen(or rather heard if it’s busy) some really good bands in there. They are very fastidious about putting your freshly poured pints down on a beer mat. I’ve never had food here, although they appear to have the facilities to do it. Anyone eaten there?
