Reasonable prices and some good flanks. A pub that has been refinished into a more elegant, restaurant feel with lots of natural lighting. Good for family and friends.

We like this pub. It’s nicely laid out and the food and service are good. Plus we were just reflecting last night — that occasionally it’s a change to get out of St Albans(but not too far) and taste a little of what counts for country air.

When I was younger, I used to go here really frequently. They used to make a big effort to provide fun for youngsters, with a bouncy castle and a massive climbing frame. Unfortunately I believe the bouncy castle is now gone, but the food is still great.

The Wicked Lady pub is near Wheathampstead just north of St Albans. It has recently been refurbished in quite a modern style with a very light and airy feel about it. I wasn’t that keen on the food last time I visited though. It is traditional pub fayre with a modern twist but unfortunately I didn’t think the meat was well cooked. It made me wonder if the chef was either overworked or just not very enthusiastic about their job. The vegetables were also nothing special. Overall it was fine and as pub standards go it was probably about average however I thought so much more could be done with the food to turn it into a really special place that I would make an effort to go to again.

This has been refurbished in the last year or so, and is now a lovely place to go and have dinner. It is more of a restaurant than a pub now(it used to be the other way around), but I think the change was for the better. The food is delicious, although there is a bit of a mixture on the menu(pizzas, steaks etc), and it can be a little pricey, so don’t expect cheap pub food(probably around £20 for dinner for one with starter/dessert). The atmosphere is very sophisticated but you still feel quite relaxed in there, and the garden is lovely for eating in in the summer.

Many Many Many years ago, when I were a lad, I lived in Wwheathampstead and this was a pretty little local pub, on the edge of nomansland common. Imagine my suprise when recently, I was back in the area and popped in for a spot of Sunday Lunch. The place was rammed and it was only my boyish good looks that managed to secure me a table. This place has had the full-gasto-monty, with nice décor throughout, but none of the original features have been butchered. The food was A1 and the service just as good. I would highly recommend the Wicked Lady to anyone who is visiting the St Albans/Harpenden area of Hertfordshire. I can’t comment on the week day menu, but if it’s anything like the Sunday Lunch, wear baggy clothes.
