After taking the scenic route up to St. Andrews, I was pretty pooped after a long day of driving. My parents, the boyfriend and I were pretty hungry by the time we made it to St. Andrews center and my dad, being the researcher that he is, had a few restaurants in mind that he wanted to try. Tailend Restaurant was one of them, and happened to be in the area we were, so we decided to give it a try. To get back to the restaurant area, you have to walk through their market, which was lovely. Fresh seafood laid out to purchase, along with loads of stuff in a cooler just off to the left. Just beyond the market is their lovely restaurant, and since we were graced with a bit of sun, we opted to sit in their sun room, which was really nice. The waitress came over and immediately asked ‘what would you like to eat’, which was a little off putting as we had literally just sat down, but we ordered drinks and she came back a few minutes later to take our food order. The boyfriend, my dad and I all ordered Scottish made drinks and my mom just had water. When it came time to order food, my mom, the boyfriend and I all ordered the breaded fish and chips for a change from you’re typical battered fish and chips. I was amazed at how great this fish was. It came with a basket of fries and some mushy peas. Outstanding! My dad ordered some prawns and a salad, thinking that was going to be enough to satisfy his appetite. He then went on to order an order of the breaded fish as well, since it was so tasty. Service was a little on the slow side, and we waited quite some time to get our bill as the girls who were working were busy chatting with each other up at the bar area. We finally ended up walking up to the bar to pay. All in all, the food was great, which made up for the slow service. I would definitely come here again should I ever find myself in St. Andrews again!

Nothing works up an appetite like exploring St. Andrews so the FAMILY and I headed over to the Tailend. I emphasize family because it’s quite tricky to find a restaurant in Scotland that allows kids. This place is a winner. Luckily they also win at the food game as well. This is most definitely a seafood restaurant. Amazing Thai Curry, fish and chips and their fish selection changes daily. I’d hope so since they are on the coast. Fish was super fresh and tasty. But not to fear you seafood haters-they also make a great burger and up the ante by sticking it in a brioche bun.

Just got back from eating at Tailend Restaurant and Fish Bar and I am not often as satisfied after eating a meal as I am currently. Several previous reviews talk about an obnoxious fish smell that emanates out of the market, but after walking in and out, not to mention eating there, I would like to point out there was no fishy odor. In fact, it seemed almost cafeteria-esque in the cleanness of the environment. As for the food, my father and I started out ordering the Tiger Prawns and scallops. The scallops came with a nice citrus-ey sauce. Those were good. The Tiger Prawns were probably the best thing I have eaten in Scotland(3 days of experience…) The batter coating was delectable and I could have ordered that several times for a meal and been very satisfied. For the main course, my father and I both ordered the haddock filet with fries(fish & chips). I have had three dinners in Scotland at different places, each time ordering fish & chips — This was the best I have had so far. It was very soft and flaky and the tartare sauce that came with it was delicious. It was the perfect amount of food. We then ordered dessert, banana fritters and a cartmel pudding dessert. Oh man were these good. I have a hard time deciding what was better. This meal was so good that I did not even have to order alcohol to enhance my food experience. Everything was well-cooked and delicious. The wait staff was friendly and checked up on us a healthy amount of times. The real only complaint I had was that they played an Adele cd through the majority of our meal. For a meal that good, I do not want to leave the restaurant feeling sad and heartbroken — liven it up a bit!
