Farm shop style cafes are popping up in cities and towns everywhere in Scotland now. Edinburgh Larder just off of the Royal Mile… Perth now has Loch Leven’s Larder in the City… and now St Andrews has The Cottage Kitchen. The café is located down the charming Logies Lane, behind the historic Holy Trinity Church and only a few steps past the silliest use of a cat statue you may have ever seen.(RIP Hamish) They have been more than clever in stunning you with the sight of their cakes and scones and other evil concoctions. I basically told the guy at the counter that I want one of everything… or I may have actually said I wanted all of everything. Anyway, I wasn’t there for a cake on this particular occasion, and opted for lunch. Since my friend and I managed to order our food a few minutes before noon, we were lucky enough to still order brunch menu items. I opted for the eggs royale. It was good, although it could’ve definitely been warmer. It had smoked salmon on a muffin with a that lovely royale sause(the name of which escapes me at the moment). There was no salad or anything else that came along with it to compliment it, which I think would’ve at least added a bit more visually to the meal. They serve nice tea from Braithwates, which I believe is a Dundee company. They have a nice brunch here, but I would probably try something different on the menu if I were to have brunch here again… but I REALLY hope I can manage a cake or scone the next time I’m here. The cakes look amazing. I would recommend coming for tea or coffee and a cake.

Wonderful addition to the St Andrews breakfast and lunch scene. This really is a 4.5 but it is the best place to have breakfast in St Andrews — their eggs are always poached perfectly — lovely runny yolks with no hint of fuzz — and the cakes are always lovely — orange polenta really excellent. All the food is homemade and ingredients certainly seem to be locally sourced and of the highest quality. The range of food coming out of what seems to be quite a small kitchen is very impressive. We have been several times now and it is a really solid place with extremely friendly staff. Sometimes the coffee can be a bit hit or miss — but the past couple of times it has been good — not as good as taste’s though… Occasionally the seasoning can be a bit variable — scrambled eggs can be quite salty and the soup sometimes needs salt added — but that is just personal taste. Very happy that the Cottage Kitchen is proving so popular in the town and look forward to remaining a regular!
