A classic country pub with stunning views over the Goyt Valley, good food and a friendly atmosphere — we love it! The pub is very much geared towards diners in the main lounge at the back of the building, although there is a separate bar room at the front. The dining area does have some bar stools for drinkers and there are usually some locals in there, but we always visit for a meal and can highly recommend it. It’s not a huge dining area so larger parties would be advised to book, especially at weekends. You should also ring in advance if you want to try to reserve one of the tables in one of the picture windows, which afford beautiful views out across the countyside. The décor is traditional and rustic with real fires and horse brasses, and the staff including the licensees are very friendly so there is always a relaxed atmosphere. The food is excellent with a range of choices on the menu plus a specials board which has about half a dozen of each of starters, mains and desserts. Much of it is homemade and the pies are always excellent! There is outdoor seating overlooking the valley to the side of the pub although understandably this is popular on sunny weekends. The car park is long but quite narrow so anyone in a bigger car is best trying to get a space near the front door, or reverse into a space further down to make it easier to get out later on! The Sportsman is the sort of place that deserves to do well, the sort of place that gives you a choccy mint with your coffee after dinner, long may it continue…
