Shimla is basically my local Indian restaurant and the term ‘you get what you pay for’ could not be used better than with this restaurant. Over the years I have got to know the owner Ron well and me and my friends go on occasions to keep a local restaurant going even if it’s just for a quick drink there to see how things are going. However, I would not recommend this place for a meal to a friend as the food isn’t good it has to be said unless you like to feel loose the next day. In a nutshell the staff are very good and very friendly, reasonable pricing but not good end result of their food.

Despite having shoved down gallons of the stuff over the years, one thing remains elusive about curries — the extent to which ‘Indian restaurant’ is a specific term, or just a catch-all generic description which isn’t particularly accurate. I’m most familiar with Bangladeshi restaurants. I say all this because it may be that a disappointing experience at this venue was simply a result of it being literally Indian and I’m just not used to it, despite years of curry experience. Perhaps the difference isn’t nuanced, it’s quite acute. But I have a hunch I’m being overly generous. That’s as fair as I can be, because what I tried, as takeaway, I didn’t like. Among the order was an almost unrecognisable and tasteless starter. To make the overall effect worse, while I waited for my order to be completed, a diner was clearly intoxicated and becoming more and more of a handful. Perhaps she was a regular, because instead of asking her to leave, staff tried to placate and then indulge her by listening to her loud ramblings. I’ve never been back. Again, trying to be fair as possible, it may well have been a one-off. The thing with one-offs is, they can still make you twice shy.
