Tamworth Castle

The castle is a gem of a place which takes you by surprise in this small South Staffordshire town. It’s low key and charming, very interesting and with much less tourists than Warwick. Recommended.

This is an excellent old castle, with different rooms made up in the different periods in which it has been inhabited. It’s got wonderful views, definitely well worth a visit, and there’s plenty of free parking around and about — the Venture retail park is not far away and it’s a lovely walk over there. Certainly it’ll keep you busy for an afternoon, before which the retail park will sort out any shopping needs!

I really like this castle it is in the centre of tamworth near the ankerside shopping centre, the veiws from the castle are breathtakingly beautiful.

Tamworth Castle is a great bit of history that has been influenced by most of the periods of English rulers.
Originally the site hosted the seat of the Mercian kingdom, but has been rebuilt many times since, due to sieges, pillaging, and othe family get-​togethers.
The current castle was built in Medieval times, dating back as early as the Anglo-​Saxon era, but most of the build is Norman, from the 12^th century.
The Castle has been owned by six families in its history, with the most recent family in the Victorian era making their home there.
It is now owned and operated by Tamworth Borough Council.
It’s set atop a long winding path at the top of Tamworth town centre, and is attractive and well-​kept. None of your crumbling edifices (edifi?) here!
The Dungeons, the Tamworth history exhibit (featuring the Tamworth Two!), and the Great Hall with its weaponry display, are all things to check out.
Unfortunately, Tamworth council doesn’t quite have the money it needs to really make the exhibits and displays pop and wow as they should for such a fantastic place.
It really could be made more of, and here’s hoping that English Heritage or The National Trust pick it up someday, as they’d be able to really give the castle the attention it deserves.
However, it’s still a great way to spend a few hours, and the Castle staff often run fun events (haunted at Halloween, creative Christmas Fayre, etc) that make the Castle trip more exciting.
A favourite for school trips and families, it’s a fabulous piece of English history, and one of (if not the) oldest castles in the UK.
They host weddings and corporate events, and the reviews for those who have wed there are all outstanding, with comments of exceptionally helpful staff and interesting menus.

I really liked Tamworth Castle, and thought the exhibitions were very well laid out. There seemed to be a lot of local families wandering round the weekend we visited, and it had the feel of a place which is owned and valued by the local community. A good place to take children, with lots of interactive displays. It’s quite a hike up to the castle, but it was fun walking round and going out onto the battlements, where there’s a good view of the town. The rest of Tamworth didn’t have a lot to offer the casual tourist, but I recommend a visit to the castle if you’re in the area.

a great day out for anyone interested in history, especially those local to the area.
they have organised tours, including tours by candle light.
they also offer wedding packages in the great hall, which is a beautiful room to get married in.

A local treasure to the folks of tamworth. with tales of hauntings, it’s a fantastic place to go and visit if you are into history. they offer candlelit tours, which are great.

A huge Norman castle which towers over Tamworth town centre. Certainly impressive on first site although the flats and modern building interspersed around it do spoil the view somewhat. Also on a negative note they have done alot of renovation and repair work to the brickwork of the exterior lately and I am ashamed to say coming from Tamworth myself — not done the best job of it. The ‘new’ stone does not match the ‘old’stone sufficiently for it to blend in.
That said, the Castle and its grounds are well worth a visit still.
With the surrounding gardens, kids park, bandstand and river there is plenty to keep you occupied especially if the weather is good. Very educational for Kids and adults alike.
Inside the castle there is a grand hall complete with armour and weaponry, a gift shop, a ‘haunted’ room and ‘haunted’ staircase, old arctefacts of a historical nature such as toys and tools from yesteryear and a few interactive holographic presentations. Kids can watch films about the passing of time in Tamworth, and do brass rubbings. There are tours available at certain times — including the obligatory night time ‘ghost hunt’ organised from time to time. They also put on re-​enactments from history such as jousting and other interactive stuff. Its best to check with the local Tourist information regarding events. Prices vary — they are reasonable — but again check beacuse they do have special offers on from time to time.
A couple of things to note — access not the best if you are disabled or have any difficulty in walking/​or with stairs this is not the best place to be. Also if you don’t like heights do not attempt the walk around the battlements and the perimeter of the castle (my mum nearly passed out when she tried it!!).
Oh — and if you are planning a wedding and can afford it its a great historical place to get married and be a princess for the day.

One of Englands oldest Castle’s and one, I believe, of only 3 Castles in Europe to have stairs that twist anti-​clockwise, it is a beautiful little place, well maintained with many things to see. Throughout the year there are various events including some excellent and recommended Castle by Candlelight tours.
